Ordinary people who considered themselves good persons and model citizens enthusiastically engaged in cruelty and made atrocity possible. The book's about the Holocaust, but the MO of normal humans becoming monsters who hunt and hurt other humans is fundamentally the same in any dictatorship.

Reasoning doesn’t work with some kind of people because their logic doesn’t come from the brain, it comes from the hate in their hearts. They’ll lose everything and self-destruct if it means the ones they hate go down as well. Everything is justified and their pain is the other’s fault.
