Off the top of my head I think TB might be the best fit if Hawks are willing to retain a little. They could even make it work cap wise right away. DET/VEG/FLA/STL/LAK/CAR/DAL are other options. But some not til summer. TOR/VAN/WPG/EDM/MTL may have interest but Jones probably wants to stay in USA.

Of the Chiefs of Staff, vice chiefs of staff, and judge advocates general of the three branches, Trump fired all the women and Black people.

Blackhawks prospect Nick Lardis’ goal streak comes to an end at 17 games. He had 28 total goals during the streak.

Seth Jones has publicly expressed a desire to play for a contender twice this week. I'm sure Hawks will comply. But I still say a deal isn't likely at TDL. He's owed a $5M bonus this summer, after that he'll be owed just $36M over final 5 years. Hawks will have more willing takers after that's paid.

Starting today, there will be at least one live MLB game for 216 of the next 220 days. This is good, in my opinion.

Umpires/refs in all sports were unbelievably bad back in the day. Almost incomprehensible so. It's not just the athletes who have improved.

Cubs announce Minor League coaching staffs ⤵️

As long as Turner is cool with being the short side of a platoon with Busch, with the potential to get some late game PH opportunities for the catcher spot or PCA, and that has been clearly communicated to him then it's probably worth the roll of the dice signing him.

I have no idea if this is good or bad or meh. Most 40 year olds don't have anything left in the tank. But most players don't have anything left in the tank at 37 or 38 or 39 and yet Turner did. Eventually he won't though. Might be this year. Might not.

Old friend returns to Iowa. I hadn't seen this previously reported.

Canario taking 1B reps is good. Becoming more versatile is only way to ABs. Aren't going to be many OF reps given Cubs already have 4 starting OFs. But they do need platoon help for Busch. I do think ex-IF Happ would be better, but he's comfortable in LF after struggling to find a D home for years.

Yes.

Friendly reminder just how freaking awesome DLee was in 2005. Stupid wrist injury...

The Blackhawks offense is rolling heading into the 4 Nations Tournament break. @mjernst.bsky.social and I discuss recent criticism of Connor Bedard and whether or not to trade the red-hot Ryan Donato in a new episode of The Emergency Goalies. soundcloud.com/user-1822502...

Congrats on the book @the1tab.bsky.social. Hope it goes well for you.

One thing I didn't think about. Do the Cubs and Dodgers have to set their opening day roster for the Japan series, or is there like a roster size exception or taxi squad?

Depending on timing, does this make Rea signing make more sense? Or just proof that no such thing as too much SP?

While I a big proponent of using the TDL, if there is a good deal to be made before the season, take it. That doesn't mean feel pressured into making a bad deal. But if it's isn't a stretch, a bird in hand is generally better. Plus, Cubs will still have plenty of trade ammo if needed.

If Donato is willing to re-sign for 2 yr at ~3M then I'm all for it. If he asks for more term/money, no thanks. He has value as a leader and versatile F you can plug into any line or position but they shouldn't pay for his unsustainable shooting %. Dickinson had defensive value when goals dried up.

Odds were stacked against the 2001 #Bears and they had one of the most improbable seasons in team history, led by Dick Jauron. 'He was so stabilizing and he didn’t get enough credit.' Jauron, a fine player and legend in Massachusetts, died. He was 74. www.chicagotribune.com/2025/02/08/c...

I honestly don't even care about it and likely won't watch (and not just because kickoff is at like 1 am here in Germany).

The Blackhawks have a couple of bad games down south but the goaltending stands out. @mjernst.bsky.social checks in from Germany to discuss the upcoming four nations tournament and more with me in an all new episode of the Emergency Goalies. soundcloud.com/user-1822502...

I feel like Cubs have added several good arms to the pen. There is zero doubt the depth is far superior to last season. But I really wanted a great one added this offseason. I see little to no reason the bottom should drop out like last season, but any dominance likely needs to come internally.

4 Nations break coming at the right time. Makes it easy to take next 3 weeks completely off to rest it. But given the way high ankle sprains can linger, my guess is Dickinson never truly returns to 100% the rest of the season.

I know Hawks fans are getting frustrated. But there's another ~12-18 months of pain ahead. Maybe they can land a Rantanen/Marner in offseason. But this team will still be driven by the development of young talent. And the big wave likely won't arrive until mid-season next year or the start of 26-27.

Ryan Donato and his cheap cap hit continue to impress and make him a solid commodity at the TDL for any team in the market for depth scoring, especially since he can play all 3 F spots. In a normal year he'd probably return a 3rd but given weak draft depth and final year of low cap could bring more.

I’ll be very curious to see if Reichel gets the opportunity to step in for Dickinson as C on the shutdown line. Reichel has been making big strides defensively and this would be an opportunity to carve out a future role. If he shows well Hawks could move Dickinson for a haul in offseason or next TDL

Jason Dickinson leaves the UC wearing a walking boot on his left foot.

Didn’t realize Festa had elected UFA after Cubs outrighted him

Let’s do some spitballing here. What are the 2025 Cubs ST storylines you are most anxious to watch unfold? I‘ll start: 1) Despite all of the turnover I’m still unclear what the Cubs bench will look like beyond Kelly and Berti. 2) Give me some reliever to have added a pitch or taken a real leap.
