Thoughts on Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind saying that AI could cure disease in general in ten years. Bonus index to my longer posts on AI/computational drug discovery over nearly 20 years!

Must read from a Russian chess grandmaster: www.theatlantic.com/internationa...

My husband has taught human reproduction and development to the Cambridge medics for over three decades. When people start banging on about "only two biological sexes" he starts with "which sex: genetic, hormonal, or gonadal"? Biological sex is not binary. www.scientificamerican.com/article/sex-...

HHS Secretary RFK Jr. is a danger to the public’s health and should resign or be fired, says APHA. In just a few short weeks, his actions on vacccines, fluoride and other public health science have shown how wrong he is for the job. Read & share our statement: apha.org/news-and-med...

"What I and many others raised in religious homeschooling communities offer is an inconvenient truth: that previous generations already tried to build this utopia, and they lost their children in the process." ~ @abbinye.bsky.social for @religiondispatches.bsky.social

I know this first hand. When I was a child, my entire community was branded as spies and sabateurs, justifying our internment inside barbed wire camps for years without due process, trial or charge.

Trump and Putin embrace many shared ideas about the world. MAGA-ism and Putinism often echo each other. I explain this ideological convergence here: www.theatlantic.com/internationa...

Remembering a lot of people saying stuff like “I don’t agree with RFK Jr. on everything but at least he’s going to do something about the food that’s making us sick”

Another “Continuing Crisis” post, this one covering some larger principles and explaining why I’m doing these in general:

BREAKING: President Trump has signed a new Executive Order allowing US scientists to keep their research funding if in all future publications they switch from Greek to Cyrillic alphabet. This new policy aims to make US research better accessible to its current strategic partners.

1. The Trump administration has crippled cancer and Alzheimer's research by imposing a freeze on all government credit cards at NIH. An NIH source with direct knowledge tell Popular Information that scientific research has ground to halt because necessary supplies can no longer be purchased.

NEW: Senator Marshall (R-KS) RUNS AWAY, fleeing his own town hall after being asked about DOGE firing Veterans. MAKE HIM GO VIRAL.

We are the leaders that we have been waiting for.

Your dignity honors the bravery of the Ukrainian people. Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone, dear President Zelenskyy. We will continue working with you for a just and lasting peace.

If you don’t already like Zelenskyy enough: He said "fuck you bitch (suka, blyat)" to JD Vance during their argument.

Books designed to be read only by human eyes are different from books designed to be read by machines, which is why Google will tell you that the phrase “shake my booty” can be found in an 1863 English translation of Don Quixote.

At the end of the day, it's very simple. Trump and his oligarch friends want to cut programs that working class people rely on, and give huge tax breaks to the very rich

Re-upping this post this morning: Big Pharma CEOs are finally starting to speak out about the Trump administration. Unfortunately, they’re smiling and clapping.

As others have noted, the life of Carl Bosch is worth a look in these times. Fritz Haber demonstrated that nitrogen could be reduced to ammonia, but Bosch’s work turned that into a technology that changed the world with sudden new supplies of fertilizer (and of explosives). (1/8)

This is not news to most scientists by now, but others might be interested. Biomedical research is undergoing tremendous damage, even beyond the firings at NIH, CDC, and NSF; the suppression of data sharing; and the attacks on initiatives to improve scientific quality.

Mike Olsen very clearly articulates something close to my feelings. Good to see folks like him countering the prevailing narrative on X: not-a-tech-bro.ghost.io/wh/?ref=not-...

I’m hiring! My team, Quantum Applications Research at Fujitsu Research of Europe, is looking for quantum algorithm researchers. The team is split between our offices in Slough, UK and Madrid, Spain. #quantum-computing #science-jobs For more details DM me or see www.linkedin.com/posts/michal...

On Monday, USAID's IG warned that Trump's agency cuts have made it harder to root out fraud and abuse — and that nearly $500M in food was about to spoil due to Trump's foreign aid freeze. On Tuesday, Trump fired him. So much for transparency.

Trump and the GOP are trying to repeal a Biden admin rule that requires lead water pipes to be replaced. Tens of millions of people, including children, would continue to have contaminated drinking water if the rules are revoked. So the GOP is the party of lead poisoning now?
