Cities and Test Scores

Building new homes at the top of the market induces at “moving on up” effect that quickly creates vacancies in the least-expensive homes. Conversely, blocking new housing in high-demand places makes wealthy people move into and renovate existing, once-affordable homes, raising prices.

Useful evidence for those that insist we need better public transit before pricing driving. Pricing driving *improves* public transit.

mainstream narrative.

Is NYC's congestion fee a regressive tax? No. Driving into Manhattan is expensive even w/o the fee, so very few low-wage workers do it. Plus the money will be used to improve the transit systems they *do* use paulkrugman.substack.com/p/lessons-fr...

It's not just NYC commuters who don't drive -- we must remember there are #nondrivers everywhere and we need to start building communities that don't require car dependency. Read my Q&A in Yale Climate Connections: yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/01/amer...

In which I respond to the "outer borough people all drive" argument against congestion pricing marketurbanism.com/2025/01/06/l...

Urban planning peeps: is there a website out there that lists the number of census tracts every major city has? (I realize that I could go to data.census.gov and count the number of tracts from a list, but that is kind of time-consuming).

This disproves the common claim that only foreign oligarchs can afford super tall condos.

school overcrowding is a pretty poor excuse for NIMBYism shelterforce.org/2024/12/03/f...

NIMBYs believe in Schrodinger's high-rise: it ruins the neighborhood both by attracting homeless drug addicts and by attracting Russian oligarchs who will buy condos and never live in them

This just as valid a vision of the American Dream as a house with a white picket fence.

What do I think of Duffy's DOT nomination? I divide Trump nominees into 3 tiers: 1) good (Burgum) 2) seems like an OK person but not expert enough to get this particular job in a normal GOP administration 3) seems awful. Duffy is a tier 2 pick- could be much worse!

In this post, I argue that the election results might (and I emphasize the word "might") not be as bad for transit as Dem-leaning transit advocates think. www.planetizen.com/blogs/132579...

This is my first post on Bluesky. I'm going to try to use it to post my serious law/planning stuff, since I'm mostly using Twitter to play at being a political junkie.

This nyt article on parking minimums is 🎯 "The requirements aren’t just arbitrary near the subway; they are arbitrary everywhere because a prescribed ratio can never be just right for every lot." www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
