An important statement from the American Bar Association. www.americanbar.org/news/abanews...

People are easier to kill than ideas, but ideas are far more deadly than people.

It isn’t enough to tell people to “trust the science/scientists”. Those truly committed to empirical truth and technological progress need to recognize that no one should be obligated to simply take the word of self-described experts with fancy titles using fancy language: that’s what church is for.

One reason for this is that right-wing philosophy is, at its core, about the "naturalness" of hierarchies. Liberalism is, at its core, about dissolving hierarchies. And if you're an intellectual of the pundit class, the idea that people like you *naturally belong* on top can be awfully appealing.

Writing a philosophy essay is so much fun, because you have like a dozen epiphanies about the most random and insignificant things by the time you’re finished.

Reading the OG Wizard of Oz books is as surreal as it is fascinating. It’s the fantasy and lore-building of Tolkien written with the childish simplicity of Doctor Seuss, and I for one am loving it. Highly recommend, especially because the old usage of “queer” leads to some truly hilarious sentences.

Hot take: 1/ The reason Democrats don’t know how to win elections anymore is because liberals have fully bought into the belief that they are the end of history: they believe that every society will inevitably turn into a secular democratic republic without any effort having to be applied.

I think the root of the problem is that every 4 years, half the people in this country are convinced that the other half are about to destroy them and everything they love. We are quickly reaching a point where the federal system will either need to ascend to autocracy or descend to confederation.

The present situation is very reminiscent of the years preceding the Bronze Age Collapse. Resource scarcity, trade restrictions, mass-migrations, crumbling institutions, increased conflict, and we are just decades away from climatological changes rendering our current scale of habitation untenable.

As a fan of literature there’s no worse feeling than finding out a novel has an unreliable narrator and realising you wasted your money

news.ucsc.edu/2025/01/andr... I for one am looking forward to the many possibilities having the full PHAST data will entail!

The funny thing about red pills is that if you take too many they become blue. Dogmatic skepticism leads to dogmatic thinking. And dogmatic thinking rejects true skepticism.

To know fear is to admit weakness. To admit weakness is to concede there are things beyond your power. To concede there are things beyond your power is to acknowledge your own humanity. To acknowledge your own humanity is to accept your existence. To accept your existence is to know peace.

The largest photomosaic of the Andromeda galaxy, assembled from Hubble observations, has been unveiled. It took more than 10 years to collect data for this colorful portrait of our neighboring galaxy and was created from more than 600 snapshots: bit.ly/405MsbK #AAS245 🔭 🧪

Last night the Moon passed in front of Mars -- a lunar occultation. This is a beautiful capture of the moment when Mars reemerged, as the Moon appeared to lay a little orange egg... 🧪

the solution to light pollution is actually so simple

Nowadays, geoengineering typically refers to solar radiation modification but sometimes still includes carbon dioxide removal. What this not-so-smart member of Congress is talking about is weather modification. But if you're in a draught, cloud seeding ain't gonna create moisture out of thin air.

Spending time online can leave you with a warped view of the world and that's a shame. Good people have always outnumbered bad people and things generally get better. Hold onto that x
