The funny thing about getting older is you start wondering why you are the way you are...and after spending a week with your parents it all makes sense.

I've been telling people "happy Friday" since Monday. Work weeks after conferences that span weekends are hard 😅

If you want to rediscover your youth, join a book club and relive the young adult anxiety of having to finish a book on time or passably fake it in front of new friends.

New NCI K32. Up to $80K for salary. $30K/yr research development. US citizenship NOT required. 🧪 grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Sending me "year in review" information on December 10th is just violence. Do you know how many goals I'm intending to hit between now and the end of the year 😅

Bless my colleagues for keeping a straight face during our conversations while these joyful critters played cornhole. #ASH24

It's not the jingle of Santa's sleigh bells, but thousands of heme folks rushing through the San Diego Convention Center's halls. #ASH24

Good morning #ASH24! I'm ready for some science...as soon as I finish this letter of recommendation and haul over to the Hyatt where my morning sessions are 😅

Oh, I'm seeing a really nice amount of #ASH24 skeets. So grateful to have a new vibrant place to engage with conference attendees and content!

I worry less about AI taking my job and more about how much of my job becomes 1) verifying AI-generated claims and 2) figuring out where the AI went wrong and fixing it.

I love December. The festive spirit, the cheesey movies, and the race to finish 2 months of year-end activities and planning for January events in a very short 3 weeks 🫠

Very excited to see the increasing number of #ASH24 posts! Looking forward to connecting with everyone in San Diego later this week.

I've always lived in places where school fundraisers focused on silent auctions and selling wrapping paper. I like this option better.

Happy "pie for breakfast day" to all who celebrate.

Actually, the best time to start thawing your turkey was the day after Halloween.

Good morning to everyone trying to decide precisely how invested they are in cooking Thanksgiving this year.

In retrospect, using my computer's desktop as a catch-all for projects in progress was a mistake.

A little belated, but huge congrats to @petrapopovics.bsky.social for her SBUR Young Investigator award, plus a neat talk on her labs work on BPH. I've enjoyed seeing this project develop!

It's wild how quickly I've progressed from reading printed scientific papers to consuming scientific literature largely on my phone.

Evergreen conference skeet: Have I had too much caffeine or not enough caffeine?

I know there are some very clever ways to reconnect with folks I've previously followed in other places, but I'm really enjoying spontaneous and intentional rebuilding of my timeline.

I love everything about this sign.

Day 1 of my #inktober2024 project #CreativeCryptids is the dreaded Are You Done Yet-i. Terrifyingly annoying with all these questions about your productivity and whether you're making any progress. Sheesh. #sciart

New paper I'm extremely proud of: "Extended time, elevated expectations: The unappreciated downsides of pausing the tenure clock". We argue that extensions should be treated as a safety net, not insurance policy (1/6) www.pnas.org/doi/full/10....

Too lazy to read it out loud? Word can read it out loud to you too!

I'm willing to forgive a lot in TV shows, but I cannot forgive inaccurate travel times or ecosystems.

Nice opportunity!

Freezing fog the past couple of nights has led to the most spectacular ice crystals.

Good morning to everyone trying to squeeze in three weeks of work into three days.

The “Calcifer Yule Log” on hbo max, composed of multiple looped clips of the sentient fireplace from Howl’s Moving Castle with peaceful crackling fire sounds, is wonderful

Is it jingle bells or your conference attendees getting twitchy?

I'm pretty sure I'm mostly guacamole at this point in my San Diego visit.

Spamming my inbox with crappy automated marketing emails is one thing, but requesting read receipts for said spam is unbelievable.

People ask me what moving to Montana is like and honestly if you are cool with the absence of two day delivery in exchange for mountains and good coffee, you'll be fine here.

No amount of exposure seems to increase my tolerance for conference coffee. But I keep trying.

I’m bullish on the future of science, and we are putting money where our mouth is. Know someone stellar who can help us accelerate progress in open science? boards.greenhouse.io/navigationfu...

I love every part of this.

Kicking off fall conference travel for serious this week. If you are attending ASHG, SBUR, AMP or ASH and want to connect, drop me a line!

Years of writing grants has left me with excellent copy trimming skills. Alas, it has also created a goldfish approach to writing, where my copy grows to the exact word/character limit.

Happy October, aka the month of Halloween movie negotiations.
