Google Glass and Cybertrucks are great case studies for anyone who tells me that people can’t create resistance movements against technopolitical overreach

Very proud of this work led by my amazing colleague @mmitchell.bsky.social! Read her interview for Wired here: www.wired.com/story/ai-bia...

Super important work from the amazing @mmitchell.bsky.social. These tools are not magic, and so many problems go unnoticed when they make claims that *sound* true, but are *not* true. Which is far more frequent than we might think it is. And the consequences can easily shape our worldview.

Many thanks to @wired.com & @thiccreese.bsky.social for covering our work on stereotype bias!! The new dataset is SHADES, now available here: huggingface.co/datasets/LanguageShades/BiasShades The first of its kind for analyzing GenAI stereotyping across many languages+cultures. Published at NAACL.🤗

🪶 2 Finch species among 3 birds for #TwobirdTuesday : male and female House Finch pair came, and displaced a Pine Siskin. Pine Siskin hollered at the male House Finch for barging into his spot, then tried to share spots. (It didn’t work.)

New launch @hf.co : See the energy use of chatbot conversations, in real time. =) huggingface.co/spaces/jdela...

Sure you could use Scott McCloud’s chart for facial expression reference OR be cool and use this Bjork image instead. I like to imagine this is a 20 headed Bjork creature and they are telling you about tooth fairies or some weird shit all at the same time.

THE AI CON unboxing! Join @emilymbender.bsky.social and me in the unboxing excitement on May 8! www.eventbrite.com/e/the-ai-con...

👉 👈 Meta announced that they're changing their models to reduce "left-leaning [political] bias"--that means leaning them to the political "right". Lots to unpack about what that might mean. So I ran a quick "shot in the dark" study...and found a *political right* bias in Meta models. Some notes.🧵

In Pope Francis’s last public address, he preached care of the marginalized, the vulnerable, and migrants, saying: “I would like all of us to hope anew and to revive our trust in others, including those who are different than ourselves.” May we heed his wish.

I might be able to hire a postdoc for this fall in computational linguistics at UT Austin. Topics in the general LLM + cognitive space (particularly reasoning, chain of thought, LLMs + code) and LLM + linguistic space. If this could be of interest, feel free to get in touch!

🌱 Pastels in the garden for Easter weekend. #SixOnSaturday

Had a really fun time being able to talk to/vent with two people I love, but professionally, and recorded! Hopefully useful for anyone trying to understand what "AI agents" are, what they could be, and how they're being hyped. And for anyone who could use a bit of levity in all the AAAAAAH!

“Economic incentives remain poorly aligned with information integrity” — Awesome info on disinfo risk from my brilliant colleague @giadapistilli.com www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...

🪶 It’s #WoodpeckerWednesday! This little male Downy woodpecker had been kicked off a feeder by a Hairy a few months ago. He flew around and found this feeder hanging, empty, and left a bit dejected — so I refilled it. Now he visits regularly and is super pleased! And the Hairys give him his space. 😊

🧑‍🔬 Happy our article on Creating a Generative AI Evaluation Science, led by @weidingerlaura.bsky.social & @rajiinio.bsky.social, is now published by the National Academy of Engineering. =) www.nae.edu/338231/Towar... Describes how to mature eval so systems can be worthy of trust and safely deployed.

Well observed: Computing does not have a culture of ethical duty and professional responsibility.

🪶 It’s #TowheeTuesday! (Sound on.) This little guy was proudly singing that he made it to the top of a tree — quite a feat for a bird that mainly hops around in the underbrush! We have tons in our forest, they pop up like little popcorns from the Salal bushes. Kind of forgot they could fly!

FAVORITE AI THING TODAY! Song about encryption for safety. 😍 "Don’t trust InstaDMs, don’t use SMS for sensitive things. Don’t keep too much email...." From the insightful & powerful @evangreer.bsky.social .

Whenever I say something like "humans are made to care for each other and we need to be doing that now" some people interpret "care" as, like, gentle hand-holding. But I study care in animals. Care can look like this mother Mallard, who I watched almost drown a squirrel that was after her babies 🪶

Thrilled to share that our paper: "It's not a representation of me": Examining Accent Bias and Digital Exclusion in Synthetic AI Voice Services - has been accepted at @facct.bsky.social 2025! - with @shiramichel.bsky.social , Sufi Kaur, Sarah Gilespie, Jeffrey Gleason and Dr. Christo Wilson.
