Ovid would have written Von Dutch, I won’t be taking any questions.

Proud of my students’ performance on the Vergilian Society exam! Not easy stuff :)

Comparing Amphiaraus to That’s So Raven (the ancient texts)

My mom passed away on Valentine’s Day. And that was emotionally wrenching and everyday is a winding road. But my first day back was today and I came back to a whole bunch of Latin valentines from my silly students

Same energy. (Aen. 4.206ff)

So which ancient poet would be mostly likely to relate to the country hit “Friends In Low Places”?

Professional obligations coupled with family illness = brain mush. All I can do is my best!

I'm supposed to be gathering berries in a forest but instead every day robots attempt to seduce me to get to one of my credit cards

I made a map of Gaul that was a little less cluttered and did a recap of books 1-4 of De Bello Gallico in 20 min yesterday and my 7th bell *clapped* Of all the things to receive applause for, I did not predict it would be a recap of DBG.

Chiefs/Eagles II: The One You Didn’t Want

AI came up in AP this week and I gave them the five minute version of why I don’t like it. 5 minutes of me describing the environmental impact of AI was what swayed my 10th graders away from AI use. It’s worth getting ‘sidetracked’ in class

I’m curious to see who from TikTok will end up here on BlueSky and who will end up on Neptune(?). How will content transfer to other platforms? Will courtroom transcript girl come over here? What about rhythmic chopping tiny kitchen cooking channel? No one will know Emily Mariko pumpkin pie

It’s simple.

Thank you to the snow for giving me a few days to get my shit together. I’m messing with the pacing of my semester and getting miscellaneous missing grades in today.

I did get back to the tristate area after the conference. But as you can see, I’m stuck at an airport hotel

#SCSAIA was so great! Caught with old friends and mentors, ate some great food, and went to great panels. Excited to investigate the game Falling Sky about the Gallic Wars that I learned about during the post panel discussion of SCS-48. Any tool to make 15 year olds engage with DBG is a win for me!

Cleopatra lived closer in time to 'yeet' being in the dictionary than to the construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Mister Rogers never misses

#academicbsky I am crafting exercises on “How to Read an Academic Journal Article” (wading through jargon, identifying arguments, situating it in the broader conversation, etc.). I’m looking for articles in different fields that would be good for students to practice critical reading! Any thoughts?

Shout out everybody who’s prepping for the semester to start while at the SCS AIA. (Me, I’m in this photo)

My goal in 2025 is to make more art just because. I got back into embroidery! I started sewing again! I started a quilt 👀

The other side says “Babygirl Nosferatu”.

I’m going to clean up the living room (which for the past week has been covered in embroidery floss and craft accessories), and then I’m going to finish these grades.

Back to typity typing doing admin tasks before school starts

#Loebsprachen

Excited about change in AP Latin. I think I’m going to read some Sally’s in the new iteration of the syllabus. Maybe some Lucan! Who knows!

Playing Jeopardy today and they answered, ‘Who is Skibidi Africanus’. ☠️ Screaming

I definitely could be on more of an FRQ grind before the AP exam but they’re making a rap battle between Cotta and Sabinus and planning dream AP syllabus vacations so I feel like this is a better use of our limited time (at the very least, way more entertaining)

Dishes done on a Sunday night *and* my grading is up to date?? Who is she??

We didn’t have school today because of cold but I still spent the whole day on admin tasks. Free me

I assigned a fun assignment where I asked them to take on a Herodotean persona and describe something contemporary or familiar to us and describe it to an Ancient Greek audience. So far they’ve turned in: the Alaskan wilderness, plastic surgery, and the concept of name brands.

Do you know anyone doing some cool things in the Classics classroom *at any level*? Nominate them for the Charles Humphreys Innovative Pedagogy Award by Feb 1st. We’d love to see many nominations of all the great work out there. The nominee must be a member of ACL.

We read “quae plurima fando enumerare vales” from Aeneas’ reply to Dido and one of my students interpreted this as “we got a yapper over here”

Told the kids that being a professional hermit used to be a job and now they’re devastated they missed that opportunity.

SCSAIA2024 was amazing! Loved to see everybody. And my students even did the reading while I was out and we had an amazing conversation about the genre of history. We love to see it

Presenting tomorrow on the Ancient Makerspaces panel with a lightning talk on 3D printing in the 7-12 classroom (and beyond). Come hang out if you’re into it!

Starting my SCSAIA with some serious deli eats

They’ve learned

My friends and I have instituted a monthly dinner at a new fun place and it’s TOMORROW and I am so excited!! I look forward to this so much

I need to lock myself away in a coffee shop and grade these essays. I’m saying it so I do it.

Googling *how…to make capitalization…cool to 14 year olds*

I made pie last night, so now I get pie for brunch which is the best part
