Sammy Sosa makes a big impression in his return to the Chicago Cubs as a guest camp instructor: “He’s an icon” www.chicagotribune.com/2025/02/26/c...

Shota Imanaga allowed three runs and three hits, including a homer, in 2 2/3 innings today against the Giants. He will have two more spring outings before starting the season opener vs. the Dodgers on March 18 in Tokyo.

Sammy Sosa is at Cubs camp for the next week as a guest instructor:

For the first time in more than 9 months, Cubs pitching prospect Cade Horton faced batters. During live batting practice, he had just two goals against the four hitters he faced: attack them and "get my groove back on." "I feel like I accomplished that and so I'm happy with what went on today."

A new number, new-look hair & new approach to big-league camp for center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, who could greatly impact Cubs’ success in 2025. “Honestly for as big of a prospect as he was I feel like he’s being slept on a little — don’t sleep on Pete.” www.chicagotribune.com/2025/02/22/c...

Kyle Tucker is making his Cubs spring debut today, batting 2nd as the DH against the Rangers.

Shota Imanaga threw a two-inning sim game this afternoon, throwing 39 pitches. He struck out five of the 10 batters he faced, walked one (Justin Turner) and allowed two hits including a homer. Imanaga said afterwards he’s at the point in camp where he just needs to make smaller, finer adjustments.

Cubs outfielders got in some work tracking balls off a machine during camp today:

For Cubs Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, it’s a welcome return to spring training and sunshine as he continues cancer treatments. “To get my fill of baseball and to do it with the anticipation of being at Wrigley Field with this group is very meaningful to me.” www.chicagotribune.com/2025/02/16/c...

Being in 75 degrees yesterday in Arizona to a feels-like temp of -8 in Chicago right now is real harsh 🥶

"Going to games at Wrigley Field, what medicine that is to go and be around that. Now spring training, it's nice to be out here and be in the sunshine," said Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, who is undergoing cancer treatment. 📝 @mmontemurro.bsky.social

A lot more live batting practice at Cubs camp today ahead of their Cactus League opener Thursday:

“I want to be different." Matas Buzelis has one goal for All-Star weekend — land a dunk that's never been seen before. Went behind the curtain to see what goes into building a showstopper, from sessions with Zach LaVine to guidance from a "dunk doctor.”

Cubs pitching prospect Brandon Birdsell has a right lat strain and will be shut down from throwing for 3-4 weeks. Manager Craig Counsell called the diagnosis and outlook for Birdsell "overall good news."

First week of Cubs camp in the books, featuring a busy day of live batting practice and the presence of a few Cubs legends:

Here’s my painting of Dorothy Kamenshek obliging a young fan at Beyer Stadium in 1947. A seven-time All-Star and two-time batting champion, “Kammie” was one of the best players in the history of the AAGPBL, as well as the face of the Rockford Peaches. Hopefully I did her justice.

Saturday Shivers. This morning on Lake Michigan under overcast skies in Chicago.

Cold Hearted. This evening in Chicago at St. Valentine's Day.

Cubs top prospect Matt Shaw is dealing with an oblique issue, Counsell said. It popped up about five days ago on a swing in the cage. Shaw, who is competing to win 3B job, is considered day to day. Counsell: “Don’t anticipate any issues, it’s really responding well.”

What we heard — and saw — at Cubs camp: The Cubs fell short in their attempt to sign free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman after ownership approved stretching the budget to pursue him. 📝 @mmontemurro.bsky.social

First official full-squad workout on tap tomorrow for Cubs:

Cubs ownership gave the front office a “significant exception” to increase their budget to pursue signing free-agent 3B Alex Bregman but it wasn't enough to land the star who signed with Red Sox. "I think we made the best offer we could make," Jed Hoyer said. www.chicagotribune.com/2025/02/13/c...

After falling short in landing Bregman, Jed Hoyer said any other moves the Cubs make this spring are going to be smaller things financially. “We’ll always look but I think that right now the big blocks, so to speak, and the medium blocks are on this team. We’ll be able to make moves in season.”

Cubs team president Jed Hoyer just said he’s “obviously disappointed” not being able to sign Alex Bregman, who he called a great player and great fit for Cubs. Hoyer said he was given green light by ownership to push their budget to sign Bregman but ultimately they couldn’t match Red Sox’s offer.

While expectation is Shota Imanaga will start in Tokyo Series vs. Dodgers manager Craig Counsell said today “I’m not ready to say that yet” about him getting March 18 opening day start. While Imanaga’s expected to pitch in one of two games at Tokyo Dome it’s premature. Multiple SPs likely to pitch.

Another day of pitchers and catchers at Cubs camp:

<shouting into the void> THEY DON'T ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT SAVING WOMEN'S SPORTS

Alex Bregman remains unsigned. The Chicago Cubs remain an intriguing destination. Could he reunite with former teammates? 📝 @mmontemurro.bsky.social in Arizona

Alyssa Naeher is still working on the name. The longtime Chicago Stars captain and goalkeeper couldn’t help it. She kept tripping over the rebranded name. But if the Stars are going to move forward, president Karen Leetzow feels the franchise has to find a way to separate itself from the past.

Shota Imanaga's rookie season could not have played out much better than how he pitched for the Chicago Cubs. Now he's preparing for Year 2. 📝 @mmontemurro.bsky.social in Arizona

Counsell said today Nico Hoerner is "in a great spot" as he continues forward with focus on stacking good days. Counsell didn't put timeframe but "he's not gonna miss much (time) if at all. That's what I'd say. I'm confident in that. ...The news has been all good so far & that's really encouraging."

Assad's oblique issue didn't occur on a pitch, felt soreness after working out following bullpen, making pitching coach Tommy Hottovy feel more optimistic. Hottovy echoed Counsell/Hoyer's comments that not all pitchers will be ready/needed by Tokyo Series anyways so they don't want to rush any guys.

Cubs camp Day 2:

Cubs pitchers Javier Assad (oblique soreness) and Brandon Birdsell (back shoulder/lat) are dealing with injuries per Counsell. Assad is getting imaging today on his oblique and Cubs are trying to the bottom of Birdsell’s ailment.

Day 1 at Cubs camp:

Hoerner (right flexor tendon surgery) is starting to throw and hit, but no firm timeline yet. GM Carter Hawkins: "Trying to be prudent as we work through it, but everything's going to plan thus far. Really feel like he's going to be here for a lot of games this season and hopefully the early ones."

President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer on whether Cubs added enough in offseason to win division: "It's going to be a hard-fought division, it's going to be a hard-fought league ... Wins are going to be at a premium in the National League in particular this year. We're in a competitive window."

Fantastic look at the Bears’ new head man.

And on this note, I was recently locked out of my Twitter account so will be posting any Cubs news, stories, etc only here for the foreseeable future
