First class of the semester in the books and now it’s time to tuck into “Around the World in 80 Days.” I’m finally “old” enough to borrow these from my mom’s collection.

My semester kicks off today and I can’t wait to meet my college writing students. I teach at a community college and for most of my students this will be their only writing and/or humanities class. All of which is to say, I’m excited!

A must read — and as a neighbor to north Idaho, a lot do this is happening in Montana, too.

As a freelancer writer I don’t have a “boss” in the traditional sense so I’m SO very grateful when I reach out to editors I’ve worked w/in the past who are willing to give me a job reference.

How am I soooooo old that this weekend Goonies returns to theaters for its 40th anniversary???!!!!

An ask for the Montana legislature to get work done that impacts all citizens: tackling property taxes, increasing teacher pay, improving infrastructure. Leave the bathroom bills behind. flatheadbeacon.com/2025/01/16/w...

I love how the world is in chaos and I try to advocate for healthy change but I also spill soup down the front of me. Like, can’t I get one thing right?

I keep rewatching the Beyoncé Bowl and it only gets better. Marching band! Flags! Dancing! Cars!

To celebrate the 8th night of Chanukah my husband made latkes and chicken wings and truly this is the way.

I dreamed I was bathing in a claw foot tub in the front section of Target and that’s the energy I’m bringing into 2025. I guess???

Belly full of fondue and carbs, the way we end the year in our house. Chanukah lights sending us into the new year!

I am drowning in books (yes, a good problem) and yet I love that my friends keep dropping off more books while I recover from surgery!

Post holiday sales? Sure, I’ll buy. Wait: all the items are final sale? No. No. No.

I may have stayed up way too late thinking about bird flu and wondering if I’ll have to homeschool my kids when we hit pandemic stage but was saved by the glimmer of hope that is the Pop Tart Bowl. America!

As a community college prof this rings true.

This is my annual call for a discussion to why current silverware/flatware is so damn crummy compared my mom’s simple set that’s 45 years old. Please, let’s discuss stainless steel.

Did someone hack my mom’s phone?!?!

Feeling so fine that we’re about to have Trump 2.0 AND a highly contagious bird flu outbreak …

I may be in post-surgery pain med haze but I can safely assert that Arnold Schwarzenegger punching a reindeer in Jingle All the Way is the craziest thing I’ve seen this year.

For years I thought I was bad listener … turns out I was born with hearing loss. My latest for the @theguardian.com

Freelance journalist story highlight from 2024: I worked for months on this piece about maternal mental health 4 years post COVID. The US can do so, so much better for mothers and families . . . www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

Books, of course, make the best gifts. Jamie Harrison has a new novel in her Jules Clement mystery series. A great gift for Montana book lovers! My review: www.mtoutlaw.com/review-the-r...

It’s the most wonderful time of year when my fellow writing profs scramble to read allllllllll the essays before final grades are due.

Inspired by the wisdom of author Katherine May, I’ll be wintering this winter. flatheadbeacon.com/2024/12/05/w...

Teaching my final college writing class of the semester and feeling quite verklempt. I’ve had an outstanding class of thinkers and writers trying to make sense of AI, consumerism, and what it means to be a student. So much love for community college students!

As a final gift to my students I used chat gpt in class and I thought I was about to explode …
