Against our better judgement, we went straight from Gdańsk to Hilvarenbeek for gig 15 in our #20ConcertsFor20Years series. But our energy levels were boosted by a brilliant lineup at Best Kept Secret Festival, including jasmine.4.t, The Pill, Kae Tempest, Lucy Dacus, The Streets and Kneecap. #BKS25

The bike parade is an institution of @velo-city-conference.com showcasing the host city for conference delegates and the locals as a celebration of pedal-powered solidarity. This year’s saw 2000+ people cycle the historic, modern, and iconic areas of Gdańsk and was the perfect expression of joy!

And with that, another year of inspiration at @velo-city-conference.com comes to a close. We’re all leaving energized to keep working for better and more cycling alongside a growing network of amazing #velocitizens! See you in Rimini in 2026!

…And that’s a wrap! It was a pleasure to play our part in a successful Velo-city Conference in Gdansk. Our sincere gratitude to the European Cyclists Federation, the local organizers, our public-private network, and everyone who visited the Dutch Cycling Pavilion. #VC25 See you in Rimini in 2026!

Day 3 of @velo-city-conference.com was filled with community building, connection, and broadening our alliances across all areas of the cycling sector. Three days in people are creating the first steps to new collaborations for future conference sessions and hopefully spur more growth for cycling!

The communist housing estate area of Zaspa, Gdańsk is home to an impressive 60+ murals along the sides of the complex’s tall, modernist buildings. The site of Gdańsk’s first airport, the neighbourhood reflects the spirit and creativity of the solidarity movement started by Lech Wałęsa 45 years ago.

A highlight of @velo-city-conference.com are the technical tours showcasing the host city. We explored the combination of cycling, modernist architecture, and creativity along the city’s seaside park that carries over 1-million cycle trips per year and the communist housing estate area of Zaspa.

As an advocate for better cycling, there’s no better way for Chris to celebrate his birthday than among a global community at @velo-city-conference.com. Happiest of birthdays to this dedicated, thoughtful, and passionate man, and to many years sharing the joy of pedal-powered travel! ❤️🚲

Every year, @velo-city-conference.com organises the bike parade, a celebration of cycling, community, and fun that brings together conference attendees and the host city to ride the streets in solidarity. As always, this year’s ride was a joyous expression of how cycling connects us all!

Day 2 at @Velo-city-conference.com began with a ride along the coast and into the historic modernist areas of Gdansk, including street art. The afternoon sessions focused on transforming mindsets and cities for more inclusive and accessible cycling. Time for the bike parade with 1000+ cyclists!

A quick snapshot of a great first day at the @velo-city-conference.com! From an inspiring keynote from @penalosag.bsky.social, to numerous diverse and amazing sessions, to reconnecting with the global cycling community. The perfect start a great week. Keep following for more updates!

The Netherlands boasts over 35,000 km of separated cycle paths, half of which have been built since 1996. This (fairly recent) success is built on design principles which are embedded in urban planning and together form a deliberate, systematic approach to infrastructure design: youtu.be/pdsUjjncUp0

With 793 km of cycling infrastructure, Gothenburg boasts Sweden's biggest network, encompassing 636 km of dedicated cycle paths and 157 km of mixed 30 km/hr streets. This comprehensive network facilitates easy access to various parts of the city, from bustling urban centres to tranquil green spaces.

After decades of automobile-driven development, China is reversing that trend and reclaiming its crown as the "Kingdom of Bicycles" by investing in extensive infrastructure, including 3,200 km of dedicated bike routes in Beijing and a cycling highway in Tongzhou: www.intertraffic.com/news/micromo...

Bernardgasse, a 500-metre street in Vienna’s Neubau district, has undergone a remarkable transformation from a car-dominated corridor to a climate-resilient woonerf (living street). This ambitious project, completed in 2024, serves as a model for sustainable development and community-driven design.🧵

For Day 2 of the REALLOCATE Consortium in Götenborg, city staff showed off their growing cycling network. Seeing how it is evolving with every new project and how they test which approaches are best suited along the diverse streets is evidence of the willingness to experiment to get it just right.

Vienna's first Dutch-inspired cycling street was recently completed on Argentinierstraße, totally transforming the 1.3 km corridor. 140 car parking spaces were removed to significantly improve the walking and cycling experience—while adding greenery and seating to also turn it into a place to stay.🧵

Ride along with us for #WorldBicycleDay.

The two of us celebrated #WorldBicycleDay while working in separate cities. Melissa in Gothenburg, where she advised an EU-funded project focused on the reallocation of street space. Chris in Vienna, where he joined a World Bank technical deep dive on urban space and mobility for @dutchcycling.nl.

Do you realize That everyone you know someday will die? And instead of saying all of your goodbyes Let them know you realize that life goes fast It's hard to make the good things last You realize the sun doesn't go down It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round #20ConcertsFor20Years

"Urbanism blurs the lines between the planned and the unplanned, the predictable and the surprising, the safe and the spontaneous. If our goal is to achieve exceptional cities and places, a space must be found in our planning for some deliberate and intentional messiness.” @jasonthorne.bsky.social

Taking a walk through Delft as a cat lover can be quite a treat. The quiet streets are loved by human and feline alike, meaning nearly every walk includes saying hello to the (mostly) friendly #CatsOfDelft.

Bike parking is bike infrastructure. Bike parking can also be green infrastructure. Bastiaansplein, Delft.

Until 1995, Gdańk’s historic centre was reduced to the function of a corridor, with the main motor traffic flow to Warsaw running directly through the heart of the city. Since then, it has been transformed into an attractive and welcoming pedestrian zone; elevating it to the status of a living room.

In 2017, Gdańsk installed some planter boxes, wooden furniture and bike racks on Grobla IV, and—with the revolutionary act of curbing traffic—created its first “school street”. It is now a vibrant public space used by residents of all ages at all hours of the day. Total cost to the taxpayer: €6,000.

Gdańsk's coat of arms features the phrase "Nec temere nec timide" (“Neither rashly nor fearfully"), which reflects their gentle revolution towards sustainable mobility for all. The city boasts 851 km of cycling routes, including 135 km of separated paths and 617 km of traffic-calmed 30 km/h streets.

This week, the Dutch Cycling Embassy was in Gdańsk to host a ThinkBike Workshop on bike-train intermodality. Using the Południe rail line as a case study, the program included contributions from NS (Dutch Railways), Movares, and TU Delft, and was financed by the Metropole, InvestGDA, and NL Embassy.

The woonerf or “living street” concept is spreading from the Netherlands across Poland, including the town of Sopot, just outside Gdańsk. Privileging pedestrians and calming traffic to 20 km/hr, the name and elements are retained—removing the curb and adding texture, greenery, seating, and lighting.
