The world’s biggest iceberg, A23a, emerges from the fog!

The Greenland Sea is undergoing dramatic changes due to climate change, which has altered deep water production in the Northern Hemisphere. This is not just a regional issue—it has global consequences, especially for ocean circulation and carbon absorption.🧪🌊

As promised, here are the slides I shared with students to convince them to NOT use chatGPT and other artificial stupidity. TL;DR? AI is evil, unsustainable and stupid, and I'd much rather they use their own brains, make their own mistakes, and actually learn something. 🪄

🌊🧪 Average global ocean temperature anomaly (0 to 2000 m) as determined by the global Argo array indicates increasing ocean heat storage in response to #climate change argo.ucsd.edu/about/status/

This is not a surprise. We know what causes CO₂ to increase in the atmosphere and we know how to stop climate change. We just don’t want to.

Ben tu vois @bonpote.com heureusement que notre livre n'a finalement pas trouvé d'éditeur aux USA ! il serait au pilon à l'heure actuelle il est mieux là, en consultation libre www.calameo.com/books/006460... @cnrseditions.bsky.social

Sabertoothed cat - Lived 1.8 Million years ago. . I will show some commissions I did for the Natural History Museum in Basel, Switzerland. Illustrations include their most famous exhibition pieces, like this Megantereon cultridens :) #taxidermy #naturalhistorymuseum #sabertooth

With the threats being levied against NOAA, I felt it was time to download all the sediment core and paleoceanography data being stored on NOAA's NCEI, just in case. I have uploaded the script to Github, just in case anyone wants to do the same! 🧪 ⚒️ 🦣 🌊 github.com/evangowan/EJ...

Geologic Periods, by what their names indicate: 1) Secret Welsh Nationalism: -Cambrian -Ordovician -Silurian -Devonian 2) It's full of Coal: -Carboniferous 3) Blatant American Nationalism on the level of Gulf of America: -Mississippian (early Carboniferous) -Pennsylvanian (late Carboniferous)

What is main current reserach mainly about? Here is a little word cloud made out of recent manuscript titles (using: shiny.rcg.sfu.ca/u/rdmorin/sc... )

My very personal gripe: if food is described as "with vegetables" (e.g. the salad I bought in the mensa, or the pizza I recently ordered), but it comes with mushrooms. Nobody would expect "with vegetables" to mean "with meat", but for some reasons its acceptable to mean "with fungi".

Are you a PhD or Masters student in Paleoclimate looking to learn and network with your community? Excited to announce that applications to USSP 2025 are now open until 6th March. 🦖⚛️🪨🌊🔬🧑🏽‍💻 Please share! 🤩

The thing about early alteration of grains in the sediment, is that there are a lot of things living there. So, while chemistry is what's working on the fundamental level, (micro)biology is a critical mediating factor. 🧪⚒️ www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Back to work, back at my microscope and back at picking and sorting foraminifera. I did learn that I can now also take those cool through-light pictures of microfossils, very excited about that (pictured: Planulina wuellerstorfi Schwager, 1866 - the first foram I had to pick for my Master's) 😊🧪

Things are heating up in the Younger Dryas fandom OR when scientists fight. 🧪🦣

Deadline for these PhDs is 8th Jan 2025. Please pass on to any interested parties. These are fully funded places that are open to overseas students. Contact me for more details

I teach this resource by @johnfocook.bsky.social in all my classes. Highly recommended, as it applies to many topics in addition to climate change. ⬇️

The Micropalaeontological Society (TMS) is a registered charity aiming to advance the education of the public in the study of Micropalaeontology through our five specialist groups - Foraminifera, Nannofossils, Ostracods, Palynology, and Silicofossils. Learn more: www.tmsoc.org

Just had an idea

Women are under-represented at senior levels in #academia globally, & across all #science 🧪 disciplines, as shown by these "scissor-shaped curves" ✂️ So how can we ever achieve #gender #equality? We discuss various strategies in this #Cell Commentary #WomeninSTEM www.cell.com/cell/fulltex... 🧵 1/

🚨Preprint Online🚨 REVEALS Vegetation reconstructions using pollen data from the late Last Glacial (60-20 ka BP) in Europe and bordering regions! essd.copernicus.org/preprints/es...

a classic xkcd for the paleoclimate folks 😅

🚨We developed a simple app to facilitate access to pollen-based vegetation 🌿reconstructions from Europe during the Late Pleistocene ☃️to scientists from other fields: Check out oakern.shinyapps.io/PALVEG/ more will follow!

A bit curious to discover that Microsoft Word sees a single long sentence as a problem and suggests revision.

Visiting the British Antarctic Survey for the kickoff of ExtAnt (Antarctic climate extremes) and got the answer to the most important Antarctic question from the archives: how do you cook seal brains and penguin? Also, “FID” is a British Antarctic person.

By now, I made three Earth ⚒️ and Marine 🌊 Sciences 🧪 Starter Packs: Paleoenvironmental researchers: bsky.app/starter-pack... Scientific Drilling ( #IODP / #ICDP ) researchers: bsky.app/starter-pack... Marine biogeochemistry researchers: bsky.app/starter-pack... One of them may be interesting.

To all prospective PhD students with an interest in organic geochemistry - we are advertising 4 PhD projects this year - we have one FULLY FUNDED PhD via the Royal Society (deadline 9th Dec) and three are competition-funded via our DTP (deadline 8th Jan). Apply here: noc.ac.uk/education/gs...

How is a group of foraminifera called?

We have 9 PhD projects in the general area of Geochemistry on offer this year via our DTP in a range of subjects (see flyer) from exploring rainfall in a past warmer world to studying the eruptive behaviour of a young stratovolcano. Please share with interested parties 🧪⚒️🌊🪸🐙

If you have “Invalid handle” showing up on your account go to Settings > Change my handle You can re-enter you same handle and save it, that should fix the problem.

Hi Paleo / Geology people!🧪🦕🐌 I am looking for book suggestions in regards to a guide to palaeontology (maybe even micropal!) + paleoclimate. Written for adults, but without previous knowledge, best still with pictures for visualisation. Basically a story about what we do every day and why.
