I feel like we're moving closer by the day toward that (as yet unnamed) space in a Venn diagram where oligarchy, plutocracy, and kleptocracy intersect.

I'm starting a 2025 reading list. So far: Escape from Freedom, Fromm The Authoritarian Personality, Adorno They Thought They Were Free, Mayer The Paranoid Style in American Politics, Hofstadter Anti-intellectualism in American Life, Hofstadter What else?

Walked across campus today with a colleague who reported he was about to teach his final class of a very long career. It was an honor to share the walk, I said, and asked if he planned anything special to mark the occasion. Answer: no. How will you approach your last lecture?

From a student's email today: "After having read your paper from way back in 1996 where you covered different racial opinions on poverty..."

From an undergraduate's paper I'm grading: "Next, I feel like culture is a very big part of our world." Indeed!
