Yes, I made this 1976 "winner" from a Chex cereal cookbook, and I ate it, urgh. But, I also made a genuinely edible, more nutritious meal prep version with 30 g of protein. There's also lots of fun history about the origin of the Reuben sandwich, Chex cereal, and corned beef!

This is a betrayal of our allies and of our deepest values, of the generations who gave their lives so that we could have freedom, and of the liberty of future generations. We must oppose this. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/16/w...

Lots of clients voicing worries about the grocery bill of late, which often means nutrition goes out the window, understandably, so I've got a new subset of Vintage Recipe Roulette for struggle meals. First up, 1965 "Rivvel Soup" from the Woman's Day Encyclopedia of Cookery! Mmmm...lumps.

One of the most interesting interviews I've ever seen, from clinical psychologist and diagnosed sociopath Patric Gagne, via @businessinsider.com. If anything, I'm hyper-empathetic, sort of the opposite of this description, but with the way she explains it, I can understand it and even...empathize.

Some days I think more about this song than other days.

Such beauty is how I keep breathing

Several generationth Texan here. Beyonce's album is the best country album in the last 20 years.

Look at this insaaaane collab I got in the mail— French onion ale from Harpoon Le and Heluva Good Dip. I haven’t tried it yet, so watch this space for a review! If you want to try it yourself, there’s a link to a few tasting opportunity locations in the replies, through Feb. 9.

No!!! Bad Texas Monthly! Bad!!! Go stand in the corner ...of like, Iowa I guess.

Some news: A few hours after I filed the draft to this story, CNN laid me off. As part of a massive restructuring/changes across the network, my role as climate writer was among the 200 that got cut last week. It’s disappointing, but I’ll be okay. My last day is on Feb 21. A thread.🧵 1/

I've wanted to make this monstrosity for years -- a still popular 1976 Swedish recipe created by a dude who was late to a dinner party. Why is it called Flying Jacob, and is a casserole of chicken, bananas, and ketchup ever going to fly? Read on to find out.

I've wanted to make this monstrosity for years -- a 1976 Swedish recipe created by a dude who was late to a dinner party. It's reportedly still popular there, at least in cafeterias. Why is it called Flying Jacob, and is a casserole of chicken, bananas, and ketchup ever going to fly?

I'm going on record. I'll bet this is good.

If the majority of your food is picked by migrant labor and instead of transitioning slowly to a guest worker program you round them up overnight, your food supply is going to take a hit and prices will go up, not down.

Hey you. Yeah, YOU. Read this. ❤️

Truly special work by Ok Go, as is, paradoxically, their usual.

We didn’t get much snow, but this is as far as the cat got. #txwx

I’m from this part of the Gulf Coast. This is craaaaaaazy

Who did this? I cackled

I’ve just heard David Lynch passed away. Many of his works affected me deeply, but none so much as this, from his book Catching the Big Fish:

I've got a real boozy doozy for you today with Billy Zureikat's Malört Cookies. If you've never tried Jeppson's Malört, I often describe the flavor as similar to undiluted pesticide. Is it possible to make a delicious cookie out of the Devil's Roundup? A little history and a cookie review below!

This is the hardest thing I've ever tried to write. I had occasion to reshare it elsewhere yesterday, and many people struggling with feeling they don't recognize their home told me they found it a therapeutic read. It's specific to Texas, but I often hear it rings bells regardless of locale.

rich people delighted that they can say a slur. perhaps the most dismal form of “liberation” in the world.

Explain your username: I am mostly known for food/nutrition writing, but I'm also a dharma-entrusted Zen teacher in the Soto lineage of Shunryu Suzuki, so it's a reference to a parenting/Buddhism essay I wrote quite a while back, using a 9th-cent. koan called "True man of no rank" as a framework.

Do not fly drones over the fires y’all. Whoever did this grounded an entire firefighting plane.

I’m back - it’s up! Bread & Steel - and I propose the seed of our uniquely American Food ways. A short rant in favor of the National Park system, but mainly what makes Steel - steel, and not cast iron It was bugging me! Link to the episode below

Hey there new Blues! I’m a registered dietitian, food writer, and dharma-entrusted Zen teacher. If you like terrible vintage recipes and unhinged reviews like this one, sprinkled with nutrition and Zen and references to bad movies, you’ll like me.
