What is the purpose of education? Day 349 #Project180

“Sy, do you think school’s a waste of time?” Long pause. I think it can be. I think we can do better than we are. I think, based upon what I know about you, it’s not a good use of YOUR time. But a waste? That I suppose is your call, kiddo. We can do better. #Project180

Grades are neither rewards nor punishments to be given or earned. They are progress to be recorded and reported. Are we communicating learning, or are we gatekeeping? We can do better. #Project180

We ain’t gonna “data” our way outta this one, folks. Same old answers put us into (and keep us in) this same old existence in education. We can do better. And we know it. Time for better answers from better questions. Let’s begin with “Why?” #Project180

“Sy, what do I have to do to get to a D?” Intelligent, well-behaved kid who contributes to our classroom community. He just doesn’t play school. Parents expect him to pass. That’s where he is, so that’s where I meet him. “But…” But what? We can do better. #Project180

Daily Discussion: What have you learned from listening to your peers in this class? General consensus: “We are really not that different.” Who says we don’t cover common sense in schools? We are all human. #CommonSense

When I was searching for something better (for my students) in education, I found Monte’s posts, his blog, and daily reminders of how critical connection, community, understanding, and a sense of perspective are. I HIGHLY recommend this book. It’s clever and a great read!

(Kiddo at my desk, whispering) “Hey, Sy, not trying to be smart ass or anything, but you’re an ELA teacher, and…well, you used the wrong there.” It was our daily grammar entry task, and today’s was a proofreading problem. He missed that part, but he was spot on otherwise. Kids are the best. 🙂

Ugh. Worst day of teaching in years. Own fault. Tried to do something without making it mine first. Old dog. Old mistakes. 🙁

The 2 purest practices I’ve discovered from my 30 years in the classroom. 1. Connections via Smiles and Frowns 2. Feedback via Feedback-Response Process Simple. Pure. We can do better. #Project180
