Very excited that my conversation with @sixteenthcgirl.bsky.social about Margaret Baker's recipe books is now out on Not Just the Tudors #FoodHistory 🗃️ 🍽️

Just stumbled on this tribute to David Graeber by colleagues in anthropology - and the book they’ve put together (“As if Already Free”) is great too: www.sapiens.org/culture/davi...

Join us on 4th March from 3-7 PM at the American Academy for a conference on "Approaches to the Roman Environment." The event will end with closing remarks from Peter J. Smith Senior Fellow in Archaeology Angela Trentacoste.

Was the Maghreb marginal in relation to other regions of the Bronze and Iron Age Mediterranean? Absolutely not! Antiquity author Hamza Benattia from @ub.edu explores the long-neglected importance of the region in the latest #AntiquityBlog 🔗 https://buff.ly/4i3O4sG

#MosaicMonday throwback to mosaic conservation at Chedworth Roman Villa, where my love of mosaics first began! Our job was to stabilize any loose tesserae (the stone tiles) using minimally-invasive and reversible techniques, allowing them to be studied and displayed for visitors. 📸 by me

In today’s new #PeoplingBlog, Mohamed Kenawi discusses the work of the Endangered Archaeology of the Middle East and North Africa (EAMENA) Project and the important work they are carrying out documenting the endangered heritage of the region: peoplingthepast.com/2025/02/21/b...

Thrilled to share my 1st PhD's 1st publication at @liigh-unam.bsky.social. Anecdotally it is also my 1st paper as corresponding author from my group / the "Paloegenomics and Evolutionary Biology". shorturl.at/VumOq Let us know what you think about it.

The HLA - responsible for immune response to pathogens - is a notoriously difficult part of the genome to study using ancient DNA due to its complexity and diversity. Very excited to see this new paper exploring methods to study the HLA & identifying changes coinciding with the Neolithic transition!

We are planning an exhibition on Ancient DNA at The Crick! If you are an artist and are interested in being involved please consider applying to lend us a hand. www.crick.ac.uk/whats-on/exh...

Join us for a lively chat about ancient Greek mythology and Working Classicists in a bit less than an hour!

I can't quite believe I'm saying this but: I wrote a book! And it's being published this May! It's about Rome, its enduring appeal, the many different ways it has been interpreted, and how understanding this helps us see both the past and the world today more clearly. geni.us/AllRoadsLead...

Many zoonotic diseases are believed to have emerged during prehistory, but can we actually identify their past host range using ancient DNA? In the first publication of the Key Lab we present a 4000y old Yersinia pestis genome reconstructed from domesticated sheep. 🧵 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

One of the few full-color mosaics at #OstiaAntica (many are black and white), also unique for it's detailed (laurel?) leaf border between the scenes #MosaicMonday 📸 by me

Many of us scientists in the Global South have been sciencing forever with limited resources, higher costs for infrastructure and reagents/consumables, high bureaucratic burden, no overheads, and still contributed to the generation of knowledge. We’ve developed adaptive strategies.

I’ll be talking about ancient DNA at the wonderful @ri-science.bsky.social on the 1st of March 🧬 🦴Interactive afternoon show for young explorers 💀Evening talk for any adults fascinated by the secrets hidden in ancient genomes! 👇 #Scicomm

Hi We contributed towards the South African Journal of Science Taung Centennial! some links; the special issue: issuu.com/sajs/docs/so... our paper: sajs.co.za/article/view... and I got featured on where I work from Nature Africa if you are interested in that: www.nature.com/articles/d44...

Congratulations to @palaeoprotpalesa.bsky.social! 1st successful #palaeoproteomics analysis of a 3.5-2.01 Ma Australopithecus africanus 🦷 reveals male sex! Demonstrates huge potential of minimally invasive enamel analysis #teammassspec Her article in sajs.co.za/article/view... Thread 🧵

A few floor mosaics from the Piazzale delle Corporazioni (Forum of Corporations) at Ostia. The Piazzale was a place where merchants came to trade goods from across the Roman Empire and beyond, advertise their shipping services and connect with one another. 📸 by me #OstiaAntica #MosaicMonday

Working #women are frequently attested in the #Roman empire: the funerary stele of Sentia Amarantis depicts the deceased tapping wine from a barrel. She was an inn-keeper and died at the age of 45. The stele was set up by her husband. From Augusta Emerita/Mérida, 3rd c. AD. #ReliefWednesday 🏺

American science and medicine has been thrown into chaos and uncertainty over the past week. Here are some stories to get up to speed. 1/12

A memo leaked to the Associated Press reveals that the White House has told the U.S. CDC to stop working with the WHO immediately. This breaks protocol which requires the approval of Congress and a one-year notice to leave the WHO.
