When you take a step back, it’s genuinely stunning how far any of this is from anything Trump campaigned on. It aligns perfectly w Project 2025 of course, but in terms of Trump’s public rhetoric, this was totally absent.

I'm certain "the people" don't feel like they're RULING.

Remarkable resignation letter from the Justice Department's chief information officer in the immigration review division — a disabled veteran. Obtained by @propublica.org's Brett Murphy:

It feels like we are ten years into a four year sentence.

im probably just being optimistic but it feels more and more like this strategy of rather indiscriminately and smugly firing a shitload of Americans who serve their country and don’t do political jobs will probably just start pissing off ppl who don’t pay attention to politics.

Weber called this system “patrimonialism” because rulers claimed to be the symbolic father of the people—the state’s personification and protector. Exactly that idea was implied in Trump’s own chilling declaration: “He who saves his Country does not violate any Law.”

I wish more people knew about the 1920s Klan because they—perhaps more than European fascists—are the model for Trumpism. This is a good summary and a nice reminder that they do a lot of damage, but in the end, fascists always lose.

"You have filled the world with women, slaves, and beggars." -Julian the Apostate (4th Century AD) The Roman emperor scorned early Christianity’s appeal to the socially marginalized (women, minorities, and the poor). Our faith should be widely known for its concern for these groups.

It cannot be overstated that one of the most important things you must do in the face of evil is to pray. Why? 1. Because *you* cannot change people. 2. It is one of the only ways you can guard your heart for the long work of faithfulness.

New and devastating reporting from my colleagues showing just how dangerous it has become to be pregnant and in Texas after the state banned abortion. Please read and share: www.propublica.org/article/texa...

Yes.

What if instead of a typical, one-dimensional poll we used complex marketing researching techniques to understand how Americans feel about Social Security? They'd tell us in 82% majority to raise Social Security taxes to prevent any benefit cuts: www.nasi.org/research/eco...

"What they [right-wingers] have undertaken has been a long, slow, corrosive education in vice: from giving themselves permission to rationalize away Trump’s cruelty, to indulging in it in a quasi-performative way themselves, to realizing—almost to their own surprise—how much they liked the taste."

on a personal level since it affected my family - it's painful to see forestry people who saved lives and have been doing disaster recovery after Helene fired because they somehow weren't efficient. I'll always be grateful to them for their work (photo by Wash Post)

"America is indeed an exceptional nation—exceptional in this current moment for the selfishness and cruelty of its leaders, their rejection of pluralism, and their determination to make 330 million people speak, think, and live as they say."

Re-defining “empathy” as “emotional manipulation” (or vice-versa) is emotionally manipulative. Not to mention intellectually dishonest.

One of the things that marked out the early Christians and led to their persecution was their refusal to participate in the imperial cult, most especially refusing to worship the emperor and his family often at great personal, financial, and social cost.

Ding ding ding! Watch this. He’s laying it out. My team at Stanford Internet Observatory documented this process meticulously, over & over again, in 2020. The R machine retaliated against us. When Elon bought X, it became even sharper. The rest of the political spectrum needs to get in the game.
