🦟🧪 ***I'm recruiting*** one student (M.S. or Ph.D.) to join my lab January 2026. Students need a 3.0 GPA and have an interest/experience in mosquito taxonomy, phenotypes, or ecology. Work on genetics/genomics is a plus. Deadline is 15 October 2025. US based students only. yeemosquitolab.org

I need a second account.

I can’t imagine not being allowed to go to conferences. How depressing.

That was quite the episode

Can we stop calling these atrocities "deportations." These people sold to El Salvadorian prisons were not deported. Deportation is a process that did not take place. They were rounded up and removed with no process. They were kidnapped, not deported.

Apparently, I won an award for a talk I gave last month! First place for best graduate oral presentation in my division. Small conference but it always feels good, especially since I have a lot of fun giving talks. I've been kinda struggling with some things, lately, so this is extra nice.

Supervising the entomology sections of the Science Olympiad in my current state tomorrow and this is definitely one of those things I wish I could tell my 13-year-old self.

I had down hair to my hips for something like 7 years and was constantly losing track of hair ties. Now my hair is like 3 inches long, I have no use for hair ties, and I just took one off my arm. No recollection of putting it there. No idea why I would. But there it was.

ADHD is kicking my butt, a bit. I'm trying to stay motivated by reminding myself my middle school counselor told me to go to a tech high school because I wasn't likely to get into college and now I'm here but... y'all... PhDs are hard. Every time I think I'm back on track, I miss something else.

Every day should be trans day of visibility-- for those of you who are out, shine big, gorgeous ones. 💖 and for those of you for whom it's not safe, now-- please stay safe and know how loved you are. 💜 And for everyone in solidarity, here's a great way to show up with cash dollars:

And we shall have a beautiful life of spaghetti dinners and wet dog park runs :)

Hundreds of Venezuelans who were deported to El Salvador from the United States in recent days could face long or indefinite detention in a prison system rife with human rights abuses, according to attorneys and experts on the region.

Just gave my first 3 minute talk at my first invited competition! Got through the important stuff but tried to add too much at the end. I did get a compliment, though, and I had fun! I need to remember how much I like giving talks. I almost backed out and I’m so glad I didn’t.

My newest piece! It's truly awesome to see the ways that people are resisting these historically discriminatory laws.

Very happy to have been asked to contribute. Between this and speaking at the Mississippi Academy of Sciences, this week has been pretty good :)

Hospitals in Gaza are struggling to respond to the surge of injured patients pouring in one day after Israel broke the ceasefire with Hamas. Dr. Razan al-Nahhas describes the scene as 'pure chaos.' (via @wbur.org)

BREAKING: A court overturned Ohio's ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth. This is a critical victory for trans rights.

Everyone deserves a good life and too many people with too much power are trying to make that impossible, right now. Consider donating or sharing this fundraiser by one of the people who wasn’t mean to me in high school ;)

New hair, just in time for giving presentations!

Hedy met two off-leash dogs this evening and one was trying so hard to get her to play chase and she couldn't because she is not smart about cars and there were no fences but I wish so much that I could have just let her run and play.

At least the actual experts still have our back, instead of selling out to the right. Article by Valorie Van-Dieman @valorievandieman.bsky.social

I'm so proud of this woman. She's now, officially, a reporter at @assignedmedia.org instead of just a contributor (and she's still the Editorial Assistant, of course).

My sister did stand up for real and it went well and I’m so excited and proud of her.

I didn’t have access to my estradiol patches for a couple days after my trip and it sent me pretty quickly into hot flashes, migraines, and mild depression. I have them again but it’s always odd how quickly things become uncomfortable when I don’t. Hormones are important.

Thinking about my grassland bird research lately (working on submitting some of the unpublished manuscripts finally). Ever wonder what it is like to be a field biologist studying grassland birds? Or need some cute baby birds to distract yourself right now? Here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wf4P...

Life is surely never boring.

Check out this article my awesome gf, @valorievandieman.bsky.social wrote while accompanying me on a 28 hour road trip from MS to MA for my nana's 90th. She did interviews from the road, from a rest stop in TN, writing the day we arrived and had it out for edits the next morning to get this out.

I'm one of the hosts, come check us out!

Trying to deport native people is a low low. Too low. Things are bad.

My mom was a home daycare provider bc she couldn't afford childcare for me and my sister but she also couldn't afford not to work. Neither she nor my dad had more than a high school education. My dad had only a middle school education. The best option was opening a daycare. Vaccines were required.

Val has been the backbone of Assigned during my fellowship year away. She has a chance at an important surgery, fully covered by insurance. But she is poor and has to find a way to afford electrolysis on her own. I chipped in bc if she loses this chance, there's no guarantee it will come again.

Obviously boosting bc she’s my girlfriend but, honestly, with all the bs that’s going on and future uncertainties, everyone deserves to get what they need in case things get worse and this is a very reachable goal.

Today was Darwin Day at my University and the keynote speaker, Dr. Vanessa Ezenwa, gave an amazing talk on parasite communities and the interactions between different pathogens in hosts with multiple infections. Disease ecology is amazingly cool and complex.

Fuck that.

Happening now! And every Monday from 5-7 central time! Check it out

Recovering pup. She’s doing her best.

I’m teaching for the first time this semester and I love it but I’m so glad I have someone who’s taught this lab several times before to help me avoid too many mistakes.
