A history/science wonk celebrating the 45th anniversary of the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens (Lawilátɬa/Loowit) in 2025. Just a 37-year-old man, a volcano, and an alarming amount of archival material. Links: https://linktr.ee/sthelensin1980 #MSH45

1953: Truman and the Justice 🧵 One summer day, a man in a rumpled suit and hat enters Mt. St. Helens Lodge. Harry Truman notices. "Tell that old coot if he wants a cabin, we don't have any." The man leaves. Another guy tells Truman that's SC Justice William O. Douglas. “I'll be goddamn go to hell!”

The Montserrat Volcano Observatory is now on Bluesky !

#MSH45 | The 50s: Volcano Underground Ole Peterson, homesteader — rugged, bearded, self-sufficient. Hiking up the Lewis River in 1894, he settles E of Cougar, staying for the next 58 years. A year later, he discovers Ole’s Cave, 1.5 mi N and nearly 6,000 ft long. It soon becomes a tourist stop.

#MSH45 | The 50s: False Alarms As it had in the past, Mount St. Helens occasionally sparked concern, whether from dust plumes, melting snow, or the ever-watchful eyes of loggers and pilots. Reports of "smoke" rising from the slopes came and went, but the mountain remained quiet.

#MSH45 | May 18, 1952 20-year-old UW student Art Jessett is descending Mount St. Helens after a summit climb with three friends — Bruce Raby, Dick Crain, and Ford Oliphant. Near the 8,000-foot level, Jessett suddenly vanished. When his friends turned back, they found only a small hole in the snow.

#MSH45 | The 50s Deep snowdrifts in winter, sun-drenched docks in summer. No matter the season, Spirit Lake drew people in—whether for adventure or stillness. #PNW #WashingtonState

#MSH45 | Leaving The 40s The 1940s brought war, peace, and a booming Pacific Northwest — even at Mount St. Helens...though not that kind of *booming.* Lumber mills expanded. Tourists returned. The USFS built new trails and campgrounds. Lodges and roads were modernized. New and fresh for the 50s!

#MSH45 | BONUS! A lodge on Spirit Lake, cabins on the water, boats for rent, and beer on hand—all for just $3 a night (unfurnished). But it's Harry Truman's, remember? No reservations? Too bad. Bringing your own boat? Forget it. Here’s the official 1949 pamphlet for Mt. St. Helens Lodge.

#MSH45 | The 40s: Truman II 🧵 With the war over and tourism picking up again at Spirit Lake, Harry Truman was ready to move on in business and life. His marriage to Marjorie was beyond saving, but she held on. Meanwhile, Edna “Eddie” returned—the partner he always needed. Something had to give.

Since I have one of the parks in my purview, I'm rooting for the Saint Helens plate to pass. I'd slap that on one of my cars. washingtonstatestandard.com/briefs/washi...

Stepping back from the narrative for a sec. That photo of Truman's nieces from the 40s hits differently now. Going through this era for the first time has had its moments—the ones that make you think, "Hmm." When I look at it, it's like I have to remember that place doesn't exist *at all* anymore.

#MSH45 | The 40s: Truman I 🧵 Harry Truman runs a rebuilt Mount St. Helens Lodge, but WWII slows tourism—gas rationing means guests arrive by bus. Truman personally picks them up in Castle Rock and hauls them 46 mi. to Spirit Lake. During these years, his marriage to Marjorie continues to crumble.

#MSH45 | The 40s: 1947 The view from a Boeing airplane at 40,000 feet is quite stunning as snow-covered Mount St. Helens and Mount Adams rise above the surrounding forest.

A view looking into the line of death at Mt. St. Helens. As I recall, this is the extent of the blast induced impact. Happy to be corrected. Taken 1988, Canon FTb, Kodak Gold 200, Generic FD mount 28mm lens. Alt text included. #mtsthelens #landscapephotography #photography #35mm #CanonFTb

#MSH45 | The 40s These photos from 1949 likely show the U.S. Forest Service campground at Spirit Lake—once a popular retreat, now part of Mount St. Helens' history. #PNW #WashingtonState #Camping
