#MSH45 | The 50s: Volcano Underground Ole Peterson, homesteader — rugged, bearded, self-sufficient. Hiking up the Lewis River in 1894, he settles E of Cougar, staying for the next 58 years. A year later, he discovers Ole’s Cave, 1.5 mi N and nearly 6,000 ft long. It soon becomes a tourist stop.

#MSH45 | May 18, 1952 20-year-old UW student Art Jessett is descending Mount St. Helens after a summit climb with three friends — Bruce Raby, Dick Crain, and Ford Oliphant. Near the 8,000-foot level, Jessett suddenly vanished. When his friends turned back, they found only a small hole in the snow.

#MSH45 | Leaving The 40s The 1940s brought war, peace, and a booming Pacific Northwest — even at Mount St. Helens...though not that kind of booming. Lumber mills expanded. Tourists returned. The USFS built new trails and campgrounds. Lodges and roads were modernized. New and fresh for the 50s!

Stepping back from the narrative for a sec. That photo of Truman's nieces from the 40s hits differently now. Going through this era for the first time has had its moments—the ones that make you think, "Hmm." When I look at it, it's like I have to remember that place doesn't exist at all anymore.
