1770-OTD a squad of British regulars shot in2 a crowd of Bostonians killing 5 (3 of the 8 that were wounded eventually died too) including Crispus Attucks,a black freeman.The event became known as the Boston Massacre. John Adams successfully defended the British Officer accused of murder.Revolution!

OTD in 1918 Sgt Albert Gitchell,a cook at Ft. Riley, Kansas,became the 1st documented patient to come down with the “Spanish flu”. It then spread to Europe and the world killing 50-100 million people.We have not learned everything we should have from that sad pandemic. ⚕️😔

Remembering the 1933 birthday of brilliant pediatric surgeon & research scientist Dr. Judah Folkman. His discovery of tumor angiogenesis factor in tumor cells was a major breakthrough in cancer therapy. We lost him too soon in 2008. 🙏⚕️

1954-OTD at the Arsenal School in Pittsburgh,Dr.Jonas Salk began a mass vaccination campaign vs the dreaded polio virus.This was the beginning of the end of polio that crippled thousands-or so we thought.Now denial & hesitance has allowed polio,measles & whooping cough 2 rear its ugly head again😞💉⚕️

1980- OTD the US Olympic hockey team led by Coach Herb Brooks upset the heavily favored Russian team in what has been dubbed the “Miracle on Ice”. They went on to win the Gold medal in the Lake Placid Winter Olympics. What an achievement!!!🇺🇸👏🏻🏒

80 yrs ago 2day the US Marines landed on Iwo Jima,the 1st that was in B-29 range of Japan. 4 days later,Joe Rosenthal captured the image that has represented the USMC ever since.It took till 3/26 2 claim victory. But it cemented the country’s understanding of the intensity of war in the Pacific.

80 years ago today the firebombing of the German city of Dresden by the RAF debated the city and killed and estimated 25K people. Even Winston Churchill had remorse over this particular bombing run, as Dresden had relatively little military importance. War is hell😔

80 yrs ago today Gen Douglas MacArthur fulfilling his “I Shall Return” promise by landing on the Philippines. The Battle of Manila was raging but by the end of February most Japanese resistance was defeated. But Manila was devastated.🇺🇸😞

Remembering the 1936 birthday of pioneering standup comic David Brenner. He was one of the first comedians to use what’s called “observational” comedy, mocking everyday absurdities. He was very funny and gone too soon from pancreatic cancer at age 78. Thanks David!📺👏🏻🤣
