Dem leadership is timid because they lost elections to Trump, a person they feel like you should self-evidently not vote for. They’ve forgotten how to make an affirmative case for what they are for, and have settled into arguing for what they’re against, which makes them reactionary by default.

Per the passage @jamellebouie.net sites, the justices are sitting by right now while the administration more or less defies judicial orders. There is actual, recent evidence of this. We don’t need to construct counter factual arguments to make this look better.
