As an undergrad at Oxford, I once I had to read my paper aloud to Benedicta Ward in her living room. When I finished, she simply stated, "That was awful." Every paper I wrote for her after that, she proclaimed "much better than that awful one." But without that first one, I wouldn't have improved.
