Bronze head of Augustus from Meroe, the capital of ancient Kush (now in the British Museum). Likely taken during an effort to assert power in South Egypt after Egypt’s incorporation into the Roman Empire — ritually buried in front of a temple so visitors would step on the head, a sign of disrespect

An urn for the ashes of Sellia Eypre and her husband, Q. Futius Olympus. Sellia was a seller of fine fabrics, based in Rome. The urn dates to the 1st century AD, and is part of the collections at the Baths of Diocletian in Rome. 📸 My own. #Rome #EpigraphyTuesday

HOUSTON IS GOING TO ITS FIRST NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME SINCE 1984! #FinalFour #ForTheCity

Appian Way, full of the joys of spring

You can’t primary the stock market. You can’t threaten the stock market. You can’t negotiate with the stock market. In very real ways the stock market is a more pure reflection of current economic and political sentiment than just about anything else. And it’s saying we are at condition “red”.

New discovery! Funerary relief of a man and woman, who was believed to have been a priestess, have been found during the excavations of a huge tomb in the ancient Roman city of #Pompeii. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/a... 🏺 #archaeology

In honour of #NationalPuppyDay, a #Roman sculpture from #Pompeii of four little pups curled up together & sleeping peacefully - a lovely piece of ancient art, made more than 2000 years ago #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology AncientBlueSky 🏺

Dogs are great. Here is my daughter’s giving me an up close sniff.

Hagar Qim prehistoric building complex, Malta. Older than Stonehenge and The Great Pyramids of Egypt, dates to between 3600 and 3200 BCE. Just imagine what might have taken place in this semicircular room.

Do diversity of thought, experience, and backgrounds matter? I think Mother Teresa puts it well, “I can do things you cannot. You can do things I cannot; together, we can do great things.”

Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t. View each personal interaction as a learning opportunity. (Even if it means learning about someone else’s distorted view of the world - that is still learning).

As a former student at Duke and with two children who have attended Houston, this would be a dream match up for the final. Also got an MBA from Texas A&M so might have them in the mix too as they have a good team again this year. Sadly, my undergrad Penn Quakers will not be at the dance.

Congrats for winning the Big 12 regular season and tournament titles. Go Coogs! Now on to the NCAA tournament.

Happy Ides of March!

I still think the mid-90s were a true historical peak for creative expression in music. Yes, everyone harkens back to the music of their teens and 20s, but just give a listen/watch to this case in point: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Stqi...

This Roman archaeologist says, “applaudit” — a world without Caesars — democracy for the win. @jay.bsky.team

Here's a few more images from our event on Friday where we renamed our building the Kathleen Kenyon Building in honour of a trailblazing archaeologist and #InternationalWomensDay. There were funny speeches, delicious cakes, amazing cartoons and beautiful banners galore!

February ends with a treat for sky-gazers: a parade of seven planets across the night sky, including Mercury, Uranus and Neptune alongside typically bright planets such as Mars, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn. But glimpsing all seven won’t be easy, astronomers say.

Glass rarely forms naturally from organic materials. However, in 2020, researchers discovered a black, glassy substance inside the skull of a person killed during the eruption of Italy’s Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. cnn.it/3XkbUs2

Just called my 2 Senators' offices and my US House Rep to ask them to respond to this. As someone with an elderly parent who relies on social security and someone who has paid into the social security administration for more than 30 working years, this is deeply concerning.

I've been paying into social security and medicare for more than 30 years. If the benefits aren't going to be there when I retire, then not only will any politician who took away my earned benefits never get a vote from me, I will gladly join a class action lawsuit against the government for fraud.

The Porta Nocera of Pompeii with the remains of the city wall to its left and right, looking northwest toward Vesuvius in the distance. Out of frame to the immediate left is a cippus (road marker with inscription) recording the name of the town as Pompeii, dated to the reign of Vespasian.
