Wow, @josephcox.bsky.social at @404media.co is quick on the draw. Something looked off about the PIN verification screen in this Reuters photo of Mike Waltz using Signal ("Verify your TM SGNL PIN"). Turns out this is a Signal clone, used for archival purposes. www.404media.co/mike-waltz-a...

I did not believe this pic was actually real, but it is in fact a real photo on the Reuters wire www.reutersconnect.com/item/us-nati...

The Daily Dot—a site that helped define the internet era and was a launch pad for me and a ton of your favorite journalists like @marisakabas.bsky.social, @ericgeller.bsky.social, @asankin.bsky.social, @kevincollier.bsky.social, @williamturton.bsky.social, @kateconger.com & more—has been gutted. RIP

🆘 The White House terminated the entire staff of the State Dept.'s Historical Advisory Committee this evening. This threatens the integrity of the declassification of foreign policy records, the objectivity of our historical accounts, and undermines current and future policy makers.

I would like for our elected representatives to be more… *Looks directly into the camera.* Careful about how we talk about these technologies. Think of generative AI as conjecture software. Some is low-stakes. Some scenarios (say, driving) quite high stakes and maybe shouldn't be left to conjecture.

A Texas lawyer gave some informal advice to undocumented immigrants. He later had unidentified agents from ICE show up at his door. A tech oddity: His Wifi went down right before the officers' visit and came back soon after, meaning their visit wasn't recorded. open.substack.com/pub/radleyba...

Cooking something at work on identifying people on Signal. As always, I like to include illustrative screenshots.

Elon Musk's DOGE has access to 19 sensitive systems at the Department of Health and Human Services. In at least one instance, it appears that access was granted without the proper security training.

“Everyone predicted this would happen in a second Trump administration, yet politicians in a position to prevent it prioritized empty rhetoric over putting up a meaningful fight." Read our statement on the repeal of DOJ guidelines protecting journalists. freedom.press/issues/trump...

This is an extremely significant development, signaling Trump's intention to make heavy use of the criminal justice system in his war against professional journalists.

Four days after journalist Émérite Amisi Musada went missing in Bukavu, the capital of the DRC’s eastern South Kivu province, he was found naked on the edge of nearby Lake Kivu. Amisi told CPJ that he was taken, tortured, and interrogated about his work by unidentified men. cpj.org/2025/04/drc-...

HAPPENING NOW: Hundreds of protesters have now gathered outside a federal courthouse in downtown Milwaukee to support Judge Hannah Dugan

Hegseth should read our guide to locking down Signal. freedom.press/digisec/blog...

In this week's digital security digest newsletter I wrote about Signalgate. Use Signal, but not like that. freedom.press/digisec/blog...

it's important this go as viral as the original story for morale purposes if nothing else. despite the image they project these people are NOT unaccountable. consequences CAN be forced. focused anger and outrage MATTERS.

Entire books could be written on lessons learned from Hegseth’s opsec. apnews.com/article/hegs...

Looks like the evidence for this weird chemical abundance in an exoplanet atmosphere has gotten stronger with new JWST data: www.nytimes.com/2025/04/16/s... Is it really a sign of life? That’s still not clear; lots of analysis left to do. But it’ll be interesting to see how it all pans out! 🧪 🔭

"Krebs said he understood why some have kept a low profile and tried not to further anger the president....'[But] I don’t think this lay-low-and-hope-this-blows-over approach is the right one.... I was sanctioned by the Russians and I’ve been effectively sanctioned by my own government as well'"

Reporter: The president has said it would be an abuse of power for the president to direct prosecutors to investigate him. He directed the DOJ to scrutinize Chris Krebs.. How is that not an abuse of power? Leavitt: It’s the position of the president that it’s well within his authority to do it

Just saying… @signal.org supports 50 people in a group call. www.theverge.com/news/650123/...

I'm finding I need to occasionally revisit my @blockpartyapp.com to delete old tweets. Seems Twitter occasionally revive tweets I've deleted before, which seems bonkers.

Following up on this. They just banned a Canadian trans musician from getting a visa to tour the US. They're straight up banning trans people from entering the US. www.stereogum.com/2303977/bell...

Can't be emphasized enough that the image of the US deporting people for things they said is so much more damaging to its foreign policy interests than anything a student might have said on the quad

I'm carving out a new beat here @propublica.org - CIVIL RIGHTS UNDER TRUMP. It's a big and important beat and one I'm thrilled ProPublica has committed to. Here's my first of many stories to come. Advocates, lawyers, teachers and fed workers. Send me your tips! [email protected]

With so many devices at risk of getting more expensive due to tariffs, do you have particular devices you want to get ahold of?

That’s a heck of a lot of paid actors.

Usability is a serious security problem. I'm quite glad these powerful features exist but there's lots of room for growth. We have other examples of successes here; HTTPS on most page loads or disk encryption on modern phones. These are major achievements that require almost no attention from users.

America is solidly in our, “Scream ourselves to sleep, shit ourselves awake” era.

Almost all NOAA Research websites that rely on cloud services - including Amazon, Google and WordPress - are poised to disappear at midnight ET Saturday after a contract was targeted for "early termination." Labs may also feel the effects. Story for @bloomberg.com (free link):

Learning the hard way, there are a lot of versions of “small government.”

NEW — After putting all Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS) employees on administrative leave Monday, I'm told DOGE is canceling congressionally-appropriated grants to state libraries across the entire country. Libraries are getting notice that funding was canceled as of 4/1. More here:

"When investigators in the field confronted a potentially life-threatening contamination that compromised drug sterility, Pohlhaus was the person they would call. He’s the one who helped them gather evidence that could halt dangerous manufacturing or shut down a pipeline of compromised products."
