Excellent piece form the excellent @douglasirwin.bsky.social . (Also, along the way, makes the important point that VATs are not discriminatory taxes.) “Reciprocal” Tariffs Make No Sense wsj.com/opinion/reci...

An EO that many could get behind is eliminating daylight savings time.

More than you want to know about McKinley and the tariff, but beautifully produced! www.wsj.com/video/series...

Modern supply chains don't look like trade theory 101! They involve constant border crossings, each now hit by tariffs. Tariffs raise prices, but the more important thing they do is disrupt supply relationships. 1/

🚨HRSA's Area Health Resources Files webpage is now down. Fortunately, I built an archive of data 2000-2023 for a previous project, which can be accessed without restriction here: data.mendeley.com/datasets/dwf...

Great coverage of my colleague @riacton.bsky.social’s work!

I can’t tell you how much I got and continue to get out of CeMENT (shoutout @luciegschmidt.bsky.social for being the best mentor 🤗). Apply!

Such a great resource for anyone interested in the underlying institutions in academia.

I wonder some people will throw coffee into the harbor in protest for the coffee tax.

I hear there are stories coming, but putting the brakes on our country’s world-leading medical research system feels like a five alarm fire and I don’t see a newspaper that even has it on the front page yet

My group (Economic & Environmental History at Wageningen) is looking for two new PhDs to work on institutions and deforestation in Southeast Asian history. Pim de Zwart is a true sweetie and would be a gr8 supervisor + the group is such a nice place to do research. Apply! www.wur.nl/nl/vacature/...

NEW: A total of 44 million people have health insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act (#Obamacare), including through the ACA's Medicaid Expansion, Marketplaces, and Basic Health Plan. That's 1 in 6 people under age 65. connect.kff.org/e3t/Ctc/RB+1...

I wonder what it says about me that I come up with graft before draft for a wordle. 🤔

Snow day = work from home and my cat is keeping me company. Bonus: the shelves are getting dusted!

Are you an early-career female-identifying economist who wants to translate work-life and mountain skills? Fill out this survey to help us customize a program @lhnicholas.bsky.social and I are working on! docs.google.com/forms/d/15vJ...

Particularly weird from the perspective of a discipline housed in both. Respect, people! Also: railroads, the steam engine, the internet… Technological advancement is disruptive but at the end of the day we are all in this together.

Might as well use this as a reminder to encourage your undergrads to apply to our 1-year econ MA program! We offer funding & our grads (like @joalkhafajiking.bsky.social) go on to do great things 🥳

Was reading a recent issue of @science.org today and am thrilled to find a full-length article by Miami U MA grad (and current NYU job market candidate) by @joalkhafajiking.bsky.social. Well-done & thought-provoking study on PEC STEM gaps: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

In 2011, 47% of US male high school grads enrolled in college. Now, the share has dropped to 39%. Consequently, there's been a big drop in the number of men in college -- in 2022, there were 1 million fewer men age 18-24 enrolled than in 2011.

This was our pumpkin pie alternative yesterday. Used pink lady apples and it was delicious! Highly recommend! NYT rose apple tart:

At Thanksgiving dinner last night, a couple family members asked me: what can RFK Jr do with vaccines? He isn't serious about changing things, is he? Here's what I told them. 1) RFK Jr has said he doesn't want to "take away" anybody's vaccines. But there are still lots of things he can do instead.

Happy Thanksgiving! Grateful to see so much engagement on Bluesky, and grateful for their small but mighty team!
