New "Osterholm Update" episode! @mtosterholm & @cvdall discuss the expected impact of USAID cuts, the TX measles outbreak, & respiratory virus trends. Dr O answers a query on MMR vaccine boosters, & shares a "This Week in Public Health History" segment www.cidrap.umn.edu/m...

❄️Here in Minneapolis, we're digging out from our biggest snowstorm of the season!❄️ It's the perfect time to catch up on Superbugs and You, our podcast series that explores how antimicrobial resistance has shaped the lives of patients, clinicians, and researchers www.cidrap.umn.edu/antimicrobia...

Great work @cidrap.bsky.social team!

These are dark days for public health. Things are going to get more challenging, but we cannot give in and give up. What this means right now for most of you is to get involved locally.  Understand what the issues are and use all your heart and soul to fight for them.

Ten more measles cases—58 total—confirmed in Texas outbreak The latest update includes a case from Lubbock County, pushing the number of affected counties to 5. www.cidrap.umn.edu/m... Photo: Dave Haygarth / Flickr cc

Thanks @mtosterholm.bsky.social for pointing this out—agreed. I teach ID Epi to grad students, & the tension in class is real. Seeing public health leaders pushed out is making students lose confidence in career prospects. It’s short-sighted & will have consequences for years. #PublicHealth

The D1.1 strain of H5N1 bird flu has been detected in dairy herds in Nevada, meaning for at least a second time the virus has jumped from birds to cows (and a strain that's shown it can be severe in humans). CIDRAP's @mtosterholm.bsky.social joins CNN now to discuss www.cnn.com/2025/02/05/h...

We're not out here to pick fights. But we have to do our job in public health and that job is to tell the truth. It's time for all of us and our organizations to stand up for what's right.

This is a brand new type of H5N1 virus activity. My description of over 40 million migratory waterfowl and their poop blowing in the wind with H5N1 virus attached isn't appealing but it is exactly what is happening and we're going to see more human cases related to that.

None of us know when the next shoe will drop with H5N1. We just don't. I do know that there's going to be additional influenza pandemics. They could be horrible. We're not as prepared for them as we need to be.

An incredible new report from our @cidrap-cwd.bsky.social team! This is the result of convening almost 70 global experts for a OneHealth approach to chart the course for an uncertain future - spillover of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).

It's that time of year!

🛟💉Discussing vaccine safety is really important, but don't be confused by what you're hearing out of the likes of RFK Jr and his colleagues. They're talking about extremely, exaggerated risk with vaccines without any consideration of the benefits. And that discussion is not helpful.

"Let's be really clear about the fact he is an anti-vaccine messenger, and he has continued to be, and we have many, many examples of that." - @mtosterholm.bsky.social on RFK Jr. www.pbs.org/newshour/sho... #VaccinesSaveLives #HHS #CDC #FDA #NIH

The future of public health is a bit brighter today! CIDRAP is pleased to announce the new Albert Ravenholt Scholar program which will support graduate students working alongside CIDRAP. We are proud to share that @ejholmes.bsky.social and @sydneyredepenning.bsky.social are our first scholars. 🛟🧪🦠

Today and every day - THANK YOU to all the public health professionals who work tirelessly to make the world a better place. #PublicHealthThankYouDay

The future of public health is clearly in uncharted waters. But never forget, public health is bigger than any one person. It's about communities coming together and advocating for evidenced-based decision-making and policies that protect everyone.

Vaccines save lives and reduce healthcare costs. Those are facts. It is dangerous that RFK Jr., a political figure with no medical or public health training, is the choice to take the nation’s most powerful and important public health job. www.nytimes.com/2024/11/20/o...
