“The habit of civilization is fragile.”--Czesław Miłosz

Hannah Arendt located the origins of Nazism in the German bourgeoisie’s secretly delighting in the mob’s irreverence. For the fun of having the curtain pulled on their own hypocrisy, Arendt describes, the elite “did not at all object to paying a price, the destruction of civilization.”

"Often giving in to the budding autocrat’s demands appears to be the rational, reasonable thing to do: to protect your business, to save your employees’ or your colleagues’ jobs. . . That kind of obedience is exactly what gives the autocrat his power."-- @mashagessen.bsky.social

"The term DEI, frequently invoked by the Trump administration, functions as a smoke screen" read @adamserwer.bsky.social on the real goals of the 'anti-DEI' rhetoric www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Elect a mob boss, expect a protection racket.

Rarely has so much ignorance & ahistorical BS been crammed into a single tweet. I know JD Vance & Donald Trump are busy surrendering to a KGB butcher, abandoning the cause of freedom, & destroying the security of America & her allies, but they'd do well to spend some time actually studying history.

The Republican party now is the most dangerous threat to the American Republic since the treason of the slaveholders who started the bloodiest war in our history because they wanted to extend the evil of slavery all the way to Tierra del Fuego, and the Republican party back then wanted to stop them.

This remains the defining tweet of the Trump era

A million times yes.

Trump - with his devotion to Putin, abandonment of Ukraine, and lies about history- is the antithesis of everything Ronald Reagan stood for. He is aligning America with the enemies of the very freedom that generations have fought and died to defend.

Can we also keep in mind that while Zelenskyy like Churchill 1940-45 postponed elections, Trump in peacetime tried to overturn by violence an election he lost - and has since pardoned all the co-conspirators in his attempted coup?

Fact check: nearly 70 percent of US money for Ukraine actually went to US defense industry to replenish the stocks of OLD stuff that went to Ukraine to use. Much of which we would have paid to destroy as their lifespan expired.

May I just say, while thinking of it, Prof @johnhawks.bsky.social, that your 2014 MOOC, Human Evolution: Past and Future, was an absolute joy. I saved/watched each video multiple times before the next weeks' arrived & had serious withdrawal when it ended. Some are still avail on your YouTube chnl. 🙏

Maybe they became chimpanzees when they quit upright walking after realizing they didn't need it? 🤔

If the past is a foreign country, how do I get a residence permit?

Your country is laid waste. Your cities lie in ruins. The fruit of your fields is eaten by those who did this. They did it right in front of you, your land destroyed by the hands of strangers. —Isaiah 1:7

Just despicable and disgraceful. The US government is now indistinguishable from the mafia.

Oh my god, Ukraine dipped the entire Russian Black Sea Fleet into the world of shit with $270,000 naval drones and sank its fucking flagship with two obsolete missiles -- and the largest naval power of all time that has 11 carrier strike groups says it's not prepared to face Russia at sea?

Grandpa Winston would have been chasing them all in the streets of Munich right now, a broken chair leg in one hand, a cigar clenched between his teeth, cursing furiously under his breath.

JD Vance is actually right -- Russia is not the biggest threat to Europe. What's even bigger as a threat is irresponsible and infantile demagogues running for quick and easy-peasy solutions to matters of war and peace.

This is absolutely nuts. I’ll never understand why someone would do this. How does anyone even become a despot, the kind of person who would steal their own country, deliberately make their entire nation hate them, live in constant fear of overthrow, & still believe they’ll be happy with the result?

For those not familiar with how financial markets work, US Treasuries are the ultimate safe asset, used as collateral for everything. Even a hint that some Treasuries might not be honored could bring everything to a screeching halt 1/

More like climate change is a massive field of bergs ahead, while a few very rich passengers who don't believe it anyway have convinced a gang to seize the bridge, rip out the nav, radar & comms, toss it all overboard, & lock up the crew pending trials at sea for insolence in delaying their arrival.

We've reached the chapter in Gibbon where the mad emperor is appointing magicians, acrobats, and paid agents of the Persians to the highest offices of state.

Georgia's strategic position in the Middle Corridor has long been a focus for Russia. Moscow is now eyeing Georgia’s Black Sea coast, particularly its military base in occupied Ochamchire, which could undermine the Anaklia port—key for Russia-free trade between East and West.

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world. Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

It is hard to convey how poor 🇬🇪 really is. Reportedly, around 34% of the population has requested state assistance, and about 12% lives below the poverty line - itself defined without any consideration of basic realities. For example, I hear lots of stories that owning a fridge disqualifies you. 1/

Hearing the Beatles in my head singing “Money can’t buy me love.”

The process has come very intimately national.

“Most protesters have the sense that we are giving birth to a new, civic, responsible, free nation, and nothing can really uproot this sentiment” 💪❤️

So beautiful, so deeply moving. The singing, the spirit, the resilience, the determination. 💕

1. The conventional explanation for food deserts—that these places are too poor or too rural to generate enough spending on groceries, or too Black to overcome racist corporate redlining — fail to grapple with a key fact: food deserts didn’t used to exist. My new piece in The Atlantic.

on't be misdirected. The nomination of Kash Patel slathers frosting and sprinkles on the outrage ... but the outrage is the announced firing of Director Wray. Latest in @theatlantic.com www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

That feeling when the Bluesky ❤️ button changes from signaling mere approval to expressing deep gratitude and respect.

#georgia is heading right now in the same direction as #ukraine You all heard about Maidan, right? Well, it started EXACTLY this way, in Ukraine, 11 years ago nearly day per day. Help Ukraine. Support Georgia. Kick off russia. Declaration of Kuleba about it 👇 #NAFO #NAFOboost

Last night was sickening. In Tim Snyder's course on Ukraine, Marci Shore described a point in the Maidan Revolution when the regime pushed people beyond fear to where they were willing to die if needed, knowing no one would ever be safe again with that regime in power. They're doing that to Georgia.
