Not enough people are equating the Trump Tariffs to the Townshed Act, arguably. It's not perfectly comparable but considering the power of Tariffs rests with Congress you can make the same argument that these are a tax that the people have not voted for entirely.

I've not researched it, but from my understanding of a broad range of science fiction there's never been any grounded explanation for magic if it exists, and maybe I've just not found it yet. So maybe the idea of a grey goo scenario being responsible isn't unique, but I kind of like the idea.
