In the Buchan 150 lecture I show how this great @uofglasgow.bsky.social alumnus, in both his political & fictional writing, analysed the issues of global security and national self-determination in words more than ever relevant today @ahallardyce.bsky.social www.gla.ac.uk/news/headlin...

Very good meeting with HE/Council colleagues from British-Irish Chamber of Commerce with HE minister Graeme Dee on HE, research and more- a very productive meeting

Cold day with slight snow for the moving US Presidents’ Day wreath laying for the Scottish Union dead at the only Civil War monument outside the US with Lord Provost, CG Kathryn Porter & CabSec Angus Robertson

Delighted to contribute on the Plague in Edinburgh in 1645 and early modern Scottish public health policy to www.fr.fnac.ch/a19314652/Sa...

Terrific evening in St Andrews to mark transfer of @scga.bsky.social leadership from @uofgnews.bsky.social to St Andrews. Great speech on small nation leadership from former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar & great double act with First Minister @johnswinney.bsky.social.

📅On 11 March 2025, SAHA co-chair Professor Murray Pittock (@murrayp.bsky.social) will deliver the Buchan 150 Lecture at the @uofglasgow.bsky.social, as part of the institution’s celebrations for the 150th anniversary of John Buchan’s birth. More info & free tickets 👇

In a fortnight at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. A great honour (and surprise) to be asked by @asls.org.uk to deliver the lecture. Join us for a celebration of Douglas Young, George Campbell Hay, Derick Thomson, Willie Neill, and others whose work brought Gaelic and Scots closer in new ways.

Buchan 150 lecture at @uofgnews.bsky.social on 11 March: eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-buchan.... Themes include Security and Society, Who are We? and the Island, integrating Buchan's political and literary writing @ahallardyce.bsky.social @billykayscot.bsky.social @willdalrymple.bsky.social

ICYMI: Scottish Parliament has debated the importance of Robert Burns ahead of #BurnsNight. It included praise for the work of @uofglasgow.bsky.social,@glasgowburns.bsky.social; the Burns & the Scottish Economy report by @murrayp.bsky.social & more

Excellent debate on Robert Burns last night in Holyrood and am very thankful to Oliver Mundell for tabling the motion and Minister @jamiehepburn.bsky.social for his response www.scottishparliament.tv/meeting/memb... @robertburnsusa.bsky.social @glasgowburns.bsky.social

Immortal Memory, Erskine Burns Club tonight. A great eveing and a full house

Happy birthday Erskine of Mar. Superb research by @poncarova.bsky.social with support from MSCA EU Fellowships programme is transforming our understanding of this founder of the Scots National League and Gaelic literary pioneer.

Just out- an interesting collection- my contribution is on the Jacobite art network in Italy-and here is a key image from the Medici collection that inspired future Jacobite iconography @funkyplaid.bsky.social

This Audiences and Impact Report, released today, gives us fresh insight on the depth of demand for VR/ER museum experiences.

21st century arts & hums has many of the same data and digital needs as other areas of research, but is still seen & funded on the precepts of ink & think. A twofold change is needed- @christophersmith.bsky.social nails it & A & H also needs to articulate itself in a way its stakeholders understand.

Glad to see this. John Buchan was richly complex, and deserves someone of Pittock’s authority to tackle his seeming contradictions.

2025 marks the 150th year of John Buchan's birth & I will be giving the Buchan 150 lecture at @UofGlasgow on 11 March. Yesterday's article: pressreader.com/uk/the-sunda... Registration via the link here: johnbuchansociety.co.uk/events/augus...

Thanks Tanner ! Interested in your take on French use of Irish Brigade troops in American Revolution sometime.

At number 7 #openaccess Aberdeen Introductions book: James Boswell by @murrayp.bsky.social https://buff.ly/4fTNYTL. Spare a thought for Boswell who on Christmas Day 1762, went to Thomas Davies' bookshop in the hope of meeting Samuel Johnson, but had to make do with meeting Oliver Goldsmith instead!

Looking forward to this- much to discuss today including world-altering events in Syria @broadcastscot.bsky.social @francescoppola.bsky.social @stephengethins.bsky.social

Farewell old friend and most extraordinary man, one of the most extraordinary I have ever met. Press conference, Port Olimpic Barcelon 2008; FM's office 2014 and the odd preface...happier times.

Preparing for eassh.eu annual general meeting & my first in-person board meeting next week. As we prepare for negotiations on the FP 10 programme and digest the Draghi Report, key to support the development of strong awareness & evidence base for SSH in creative, design, digital, heritage & security.

This would be a substantial rise in representative's pay, which is currently 3x min wage (Holyrood) and 4x (Westminster).

Looking forward to speaking next week on 'Numbers and Human Nature' to commemorate a third of a millenium of the Maths Chair at Glasgow, arguing that the root of the Scottish Enlightenment lay as much in data collection practices as big ideas www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a-third-of...

This remains a major issue for the music industry. Europe is the heart of world music-Germany alone produces 25% of global opera annually- and I have first hand knowledge of the impact these issues are creating, & worsening year on year, at least to date: see www.newstatesman.com/culture/musi...

Also sharp, flexible and excellent to work with, with the occasional touch of mischief @anitaanand.bsky.social

Not enormously persuasive: there are many Trump-like Euro politicians, data shows inflation, immigration & gender/culture wars were major vote winners for Trump;UK is arguably as exceptionalist as US (Brexit).Lack of understanding that Trump would win reflected personal preferences not social science.

A third of a millenium of the Maths Chair at Glasgow being celebrated on 4 December: registration link is at 333-years-of-maths-at-glasgow.eventbrite.co.uk. Speaking on 'Numbers and Human Nature: the Data of the Scottish Enlightenment' and the importance of the first age of analogue data.

Found this very interesting with the excellent Murray Pittock There was the first recorded suggestion, of a vote based on universal suffrage (inc women) on the Act of Union Ayr was only Burgh in favour of the Act, but a petition of 1000 folk from Ayr rejected it podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/e...

Another great week in Vienna marvelling at new offers (the Strauss Museum, the Last Days of Pompeii VR & Metaverse), the extension of the cultural brand across new territory and the recognition of the value of all this to the economy- €5bn for Mozart alone 20 years ago, more like double now.

Remembering my great uncle, Catholic CO in World War I, sentenced to death 1916, reprieved. This is a sculpture made in the form of a quote from his memoirs in 2017.

My three favourite books of 2023-bringing historical sense to an age of resurrected tribalism: shepherd.com/bboy/2023/f/...

In Black History month,. remembering Scots: Andrew Watson (1856-1921), University of Glasgow alumnus. two Scottish Cups with Queen's Park, three Scotland caps, captain in Scotland's 6-1 victory over England in London in 1881.

Follow Murray for fascinating insights into Scotland as part of the global community with academic and personal experience and views on Scottish culture, Scottish history, and Scotland's future.

A favourite place to start to find out what is happening in the world on the basis of data not anger is www.gapminder.org

Posting on here is going to be focused on new research which increases human knowledge and new events which change its interpretation. Humankind long lived in small adversarial tribal groupings. Escaping from these into knowledge is the basis of civilisation. @ruthwatson.bsky.social
