It’s great to see IBM headlining in scientific #HPC again, especially with a leading partner like @nersc.bsky.social. While AI is sucking so much air out of the room, quantum is a green field for innovation. thequantuminsider.com/2025/01/24/n...

In Science Advances: "We took a deep dive into over 1.8 million bacterial and archaeal genomes to see how much of their diversity we’ve actually captured. Turns out that despite all the genomes we’ve sequenced, we’ve only scratched the surface." -Dongying Wu 🖥️🧬🦠 biosciences.lbl.gov/2025/01/17/t...

Congratulations to Lab scientists Raúl Briceño, Stefan Wild, and Ahmet Kusoglu for receiving the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor the US government bestows on early-career scientists and engineers. 🧪 More ⬇️ newscenter.lbl.gov/2025/01/16/t...

This remarkable chart brings to mind the work of Arthur Rosenfeld, who drove the establishment of the California energy efficiency standards in 1977. www.tang-prize.org/en/media_det.... Art was awarded the National Medal of Technology in 2011 for his contributions.

Helen Edwards was both a brilliant accelerator scientist and one of the most inspiring leaders we have had in the field of particle physics. It was a privilege to work with her at Fermilab. She deserves to have her name on the Integrate Engineering Research Center there.

As artificial intelligence increasingly becomes a part of daily life, the National Academies are advising the nation on AI use, policy, ethics, and innovation. Explore the work we're doing to shape the future of AI:

Reuters story about the report on data-center energy use by @berkeleylab.lbl.gov for the U.S. DOE: www.reuters.com/business/ene... "The report's lead researcher Arman Shehabi and his team recommend publishing the report annually, or biannually, to more closely track data-center trends."

UC's incredible faculty and staff are the heart and soul of this institution. The work you do makes an impact for the greater good of our students and our world. Thank you for all you do and happy holidays to you and your loved ones #FiatLux ✨ www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUOf...

Congratulations to Paul Alivisatos, who I had the good fortune of succeeding as Director of Berkeley Lab.

This is so impressive. In 2018, Tim Latimer and Jack Norbeck brought their brilliant idea for a disruptive geothermal company to Cyclotron Road at Berkeley Lab. In 2021 they celebrated a $28 million funding round. Today they are breaking records for geothermal energy production. The sky's the limit.

If you have not read the writings of John McPhee, you have something to look forward to. If geology interests you, you could start with any one of the Annals of the Former World series. For a wonderful essay, try "Paddling after Henry David Thoreau" in the New Yorker of December 7, 2003.

Today let us celebrate Ashok Gadgil, who has developed low-cost solutions to some of the developing world’s most intractable problems, including safe drinking water technologies, energy efficient stoves, and ways to make efficient electric lighting affordable. newscenter.lbl.gov/2023/10/24/b...
