Really enjoying Joseph Rosenbaum's "Meditations on Alignment". This one drawing parallels between our development of AI and a Norse creation myth is particularly compelling.

This is not how you treat allies. Big question for Five Eyes members minus US is whether their intelligence will be shared by US with Russia and others. This is not just a massive risk to national security but also to lives.

Good job, Marmots! (you gotta celebrate the small wins these days).

Excellent news... let's drop those internal trade barriers!!

Agree 100%!

In lighter news... what to do if there's a moose at your door. 🇨🇦

Felt this over here on Vancouver Island. Wild. Lasted quite a long time!

Wtf WaPo?!

If you're like me & have bought into the Kindle eco-system, you might want to download your books since Amazon is removing the ability to do so (as of Feb 26 you'll only be able to get them via wifi on a Kindle device or app). I found this video particularly helpful! www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGJD...

This is an example of the importance of my work on responsible data, particularly government control of sensitive & personal information, and how we are failing to uphold those values. The laws too often lag behind the technology. Even when there, laws are enforced in response, not prevention.

“It is a safe prediction that Trump’s attack on health science will result in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives. And millions of lives will be diminished,” Crawford Kilian writes. thetyee.ca/Analysis/202...

We're in a coup, which means we're in a nightmare, which means we're all ramped up, so let me offer you some deep time, perseverance, and beauty, before you and I go back to the work.

I'm far from the only Canadian who did a spit-take over Steve Israel salivating in the NYT at the prospect of the US annexing my country. Fortunately, a lot of Americans disagree passionately with him. We could use more of you. A lot more. 🧵 www.robcottingham.ca/2025/02/cana...

"We will break international law. We will do war crimes" Has The Hague ever had such evidence before?

This is a genocidal war crime endorsed by the president of the United States

We should use this moment as an opportunity to strengthen our economy from external threats by localizing investment funds, prioritizing locally-owned, triple-bottom line ventures, co-ops, land trusts, social enterprises, cultural assets, habitat restoration, and Indigenous-owned ventures.

Anyone who happened to know that the White House would announce and then suspend tariffs within 24 hours just made a boatload of money.

I think the worst thing Canada can do right now is be complacent. Continue to plan for the worst case scenario. Remove interprovincial trade barriers. Broaden our export markets. Support Canadian business and each other. LFG.

Statement from German embassy in Canada: "We are concerned about the announcement by the USA to impose tariffs on Canada and others which was also stressed by German government representatives today in Berlin." 1/3

I hope that this 30 day “reprieve” does not dampen our outrage or resolve. Canadians must endeavour to buy Canadian. Inter-province trade barriers must drop. We need to support each other. We were threatened by an abusive partner. The abuse won’t end & will likely escalate. This isn’t over.

Tim Pool is really giving off March 15, 1939 vibes here. Also, the very few Canadians I’ve seen who want to be annexed? Well, this is really what you could expect.

Every time he says this, Canada should impose tariffs on 51 new items, at a rate of 51%. I'm 51% serious about this.

I would argue any analysis of Trump apparently being more willing to negotiate with Mexico than Canada should include the fact he hasn't expressed any interest in absorbing Mexico www.cbc.ca/news/world/m...

an unelected billionaire storming into US agencies, installing his unqualified and unapproved lackeys, purging civil servants, seizing access to sensitive data and payments, unilaterally eliminating federal agencies: fine identifying the lackeys: illegal

THIS is really good piece by Michael Harris on why Pierre Poilievre is unfit to lead Canada through the obstacle course that is the Trump Administration and why he'd be a terrible choice for Prime Minister of Canada. Dec 2024, but more relevant than ever. Via @thetyee.ca thetyee.ca/Analysis/202...

BREAKING Trump delays tariffs on Mexican goods after Sheinbaum agrees to rush 10,000 troops to border. Canada, source of 1.5 percent of migrants and 0.2 percent of fentanyl, spent $900M on new border security to appease Trump. Tariffs on Canadian goods are still set to start Tuesday bit.ly/3CAyHso

This is what happens when you ask me to help sanewash the Trump tariffs.

Great piece. Easier in summer, obviously. But should be able to mimic some of this in the off season.

Here's the speech if you haven't heard it. 13 minutes of your time. Share it with your American friends and neighbours, because they won't see it otherwise. Circulate it in Mexico and Denmark, France and the UK, Panama and Germany, Poland and Estonia, and especially -- especially -- Ukraine.

I thought I was having a stroke but it turns out this is just what it feels like to agree with Doug Ford.

I wonder if American nostalgia will ever run to “that time we had allies.”

Each State's Top Country For Exports. Canada is number 1 for 32 states, Mexico for 6 and China for 5 See the import map here: brilliantmaps.com/the-top-i...

BREAKING: Ontario Premier Doug Ford says they are removing ALL American drinks from the market. The LCBO has a monopoly on drinks distribution in Ontario. Trump just torched $1 billion of US exports. Holy shit.

Looking for a way to show some love to your neighbours? In response to the outpouring of anger and solidarity in the face of Trump's destructive tariffs, I created this list of my favourite Canadian products and stores. #Canada www.alexandrasamuel.com/world/my-fav...

See below a joint statement from the Liberal Party of Canada leadership candidates on President Donald Trump's unjustified tariffs.

If you missed it, here’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s, quite sincerely, historic speech. It’s for, and is galvanizing, Canadians but he also speaks very directly to our allies in the US. Please hear us out. I do find myself thinking how much I’d give up, and do, for this imperfect country.

Canada is a country worth fighting for against anyone who’d roll up and sock us in the kisser, goddamn them. I will still stand up for my country and our right to decide for ourselves how we want to live. www.davidmoscrop.com/p/confession...

Someone once described a Canadian political cartoon as a beaver rolling up its sleeve, and a hard-hitting Canadian political cartoon as a beaver rolling up its sleeve and making a fist. Today we passed the making-a-fist stage.
