We are screwed

Trump & Republicans’ “One Big Beautiful Bill” would be one of the largest wealth transfers from the working class to the wealthy in U.S. history. But how would it affect YOU? We built a calculator. Plug in your info to see what it’d mean for your finances. www.washingtonpost.com/business/int...

"We are witnessing something without precedent: a Supreme Court that appears to be at war with the federal judiciary's core constitutional function. It has chosen to bless the administration's actions, and in doing so, systematically dismantles the authority of any court that stands in its way."

‘Trump making “it up as he goes along,” largely depending on his mood — or even on what’s on his favorite TV channel. ‘

You know how the GOP was pushed rightward over time? A bunch of people frustrated with the party's moderation organized themselves to take over the party. They ran for precinct captain & elected office as more right-leaning Republicans. The far right transformed the GOP by outworking the moderates.

"While it’s mostly gone unremarked upon in the mainstream media, institutions of higher learning across the country are about to be pummeled by the looming reconciliation bill, which may portend an extinction event for higher education as we know it." newrepublic.com/article/1970...

Strong words from Rep. Kim Schrier!

Chart-heavy thread incoming. This is an attempt to survey the research to answer the question - were the forecasts predicting a lot of Brexit damage correct? 1/n.

Reading "The Fourth Turning." Oooof! A hodge-podge of cherry-picked evidence, historical events taken out of context, and "heads I win, tails you lose" reasoning. It legit gropes towards something like Kuhn or Skowronek. But seems like of lots of post-hoc theorizing. The Right wants war over this?

Wow: ICE Has Deported at Least 70 U.S. Citizens

In responding to U.S. strikes, Iran’s “overriding priority is ensuring its survival,” writes Uri Friedman. Within that prism, there are “five potential Iranian moves”:

Why am I so unimpressed by these strikes? Israel and the US have failed to target significant elements of Iran's nuclear materials and production infrastructure. RISING LION and MIDNIGHT HAMMER are tactically brilliant, but may turn out to be strategic failures. 🧵 1/17

My take: the forces of nationalism and theocracy have placed ego-maniacal zealots at the head of nations throughout the world. These leaders are simultaneously fighting against *and* trying to master: globalization and technological change. 1/n

North Korea sent 11,000 elite soldiers to support Russia. Their progress — especially in drone warfare — has implications not only for Russia's war on Ukraine but also peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Full disclosure: Robert Kagan surprised me. www.theatlantic.com/internationa...

the takeaway from this is that, for all practical purposes, stephen miller is the acting president of the united states. trump is just play-acting as the boss, as he did on the Apprentice. (gift link) www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

[email protected] and I had a great conversation with the always insightful @michaelkofman.bsky.social about the current state of the war in Ukraine. Mike shared his assessment of the frontline situation, how things are going for each side, & what he’s watching closely in the months ahead.

NEW: Data shows that as of June 15, fully 30% of all people arrested by ICE and sent to detention had NO CRIMINAL RECORD. 11,763 people in detention as of last Sunday had no criminal record and were arrested inside the country by ICE -- an increase of 4,000 people in two weeks!

I often disagree with @mattyglesias.bsky.social, but today he makes the case for parliamentary cities with proportional representation and I firmly agree. We need a new era of democratic revival and political reform in the US. Cities and states should be laboratories of democratization.

Thanks for the reminder @janemunday.bsky.social. Every summer, I repost this article DROWNING DOES NOT LOOK LIKE DROWNING. To date, I know of FOUR kids who were saved after someone who'd clicked on the link learnt how to spot actual drowning. Take time to read and pass on. slate.com/technology/2...

When you’re just grabbing brown people

Using data from @today.yougov.com, we estimate that Donald Trump’s approval rating is net negative among adults in fifteen states he won last year www.economist.com/interactive/...

“.. ‘They did not show any warrant. They did not provide any reason to why they were there. It seemed to me that they were just like, Hey, you look brown, you look Mexican enough that maybe you’re undocumented.’” @nytimes.com www.nytimes.com/2025/06/15/u...

Decent call from Mary-Beth B: Trump is in analysis paralysis. Can’t figure out who to listen to, so he’s just gonna delay delay til he hears what he wants to hear.

Stockton, CA: Heavily armed masked kidnappers drove up in an unmarked car and pulled a landscaper out of his truck and kidnapped him. When the landscaping company owner asked the men what they were doing, the kidnappers assaulted him and pulled out a metal baton.

Two weeks you say?

Big things in “two weeks” has usually been Trump’s code for “nothing is going to happen.” Yet, I still think there’s very compelling logic for greater US involvement. I’m not excited about it. But Israel (and FOX News) may force our hand.

So far, strikes on Iran's facilities have created limited chemical and radiological hazards. Experts say that's not likely to change even if the U.S. uses a big bomb.

Once again, we should abolish the current advice & consent process. It’s worse than useless & lends the shabby veneer of legitimacy to incompetence & fascism. A total Article I constitutional failure. bsky.app/profile/mcop...
