Hate speech on X surged for at least 8 months after Elon Musk takeover – new research: theconversation.com/hate-speech-... (@us.theconversation.com)

NASA will be gutted today by Musk and his friends.

I have been invited to take part in PEN America's 2025 World Voices Festival, a tremendously exciting proposition for a relatively new and unconnected author. I am declining this invitation in solidarity with Palestine, and reaffirming the boycott put in place by Writers Against the War on Gaza.

Good things come to those who wait - the Video Game History Foundation Digital Library launches on January 30th, 2025. (We'll tell you all about it then!)

How do autocrats stay in power? Our new research dives into the strategies of political control—repression, co-optation, and indoctrination—used across 229 autocracies from 1946 to 2010. What we found will change the way you think about authoritarian resilience. 🧵👇

Lev Manovich has a new book out on generative AI and art. Since his earlier work has been so central to our thinking about digital media studies since the 2000s, his taken on generative AI would be interesting to explore: manovich.net/index.php/pr...

David Lynch (1946 - 2025). RIP. The Straight Story is an underrated film of his.

#HDA

Tony Slattery was funny as hell. RIP.

i see people betting on the idea of federation in bluesky. at the same time, we should bet on simplifying mastodon at scale. approach the problem from both directions. we may need and not have federation in bluesky at some point. it couldn't hurt to have a better lifeboat.

What a shitshow already!

A step in the right direction. (Interesting to see this and the #Mastodon announcement on the same day!)

This piece by @carolecadwalla.bsky.social is insightful re: Musk/Zuck/Trump. Upshot: The gov/mainstream media don’t really have much of a clue as to what they’re facing. Relevant today also given the techno-optimism of the UK gov “AI Opportunities Action Plan”.

Looking forward to celebrating Daniel Hannan day! 👇👇 (cc: @playingwithdust.bsky.social)

I’m increasingly not a fan of broad opinion pieces - they’re inherently more open to errors. Case in point: “…our children will have always-available tutors perfectly tuned to their personalities and learning styles.” 🤦‍♂️ #edtech www.nytimes.com/2025/01/12/o...

This sounds significant. Section 15 of Ireland’s Climate Act requires public bodies to act in a way to further the Climate Action Plan and Long Term Strategy - threat of legal action should compel them to include climate in their core mandates.

“You want to help create a world where you can sit around and think about clouds. That should be our right as human beings.”

Excellent and detailed read re: complexities of effective enforcement of social media regulation in liberal democracies. Very interesting in light of @davidallengreen.bsky.social’s FT piece I posted earlier.

Good article below on social media and the state. In summary, the real power lies in action by: Government/Policymakers: Strong regulation. People: Disengagement

This is quite the ride! Despite what he’s done, I hope the lad Thiel is ok. on.ft.com/407WVSF

There’s nothing wrong with targeting financial assets of criminal actors, including smugglers. But it won’t change the fact that people need to escape danger & there are no safe routes. Squeezing boat supply chains so far has led to smugglers using poorer quality & flimsier boats🤷‍♀️ #r4today

Remember the Rohingya.
