The misleading use of per capita GDP: Numerators, denominators and living standards

“Oz is implying that people are unhealthy on purpose and that they are unpatriotic and a drain on society. This is othering, and it is central to fascism.” “Oz also alludes to another fascist concept, a mythical past, which is also baked into wellness”

Last month was the 2nd warmest March on record for land areas around the world... Data provided by @noaa.gov NOAAGlobalTemp v6.0.0 (www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/lan...).

How can it be in the year 2025 when we’ve passed the 1.5°C global warming threshold that the front runner in a federal election can stand on a debate stage arguing for “low carbon oil and gas”?

I look at close to 100 stories a week and even more outside of work. I’ve done this ten years. This is among the most horrific things I’ve ever read — testimony from dying children whose access to medicine has been cut off by the Trump administration. www.npr.org/sections/goa...

Humanity is choosing to fail! We are doing virtually nothing to try and limit global warming to even 4°C. Let alone to 1.5°C. Methane concentrations are following the highest IPCC scenario, now at 1938 ppb. H/t @glenpeters.bsky.social

Sigh. This reads like a dispatch from fantasyland that ignores all of the lessons of the past six months, let alone the past eight years. Quick 🧵 First problem: The article begins from the false premise that restoration of the relationship is even possible. It’s not. www.cbc.ca/news/world/c...

“The largest humanitarian crisis, largest displacement crisis, largest hunger crisis … It’s breaking all sorts of wrong records.” “Almost half the 50-million population of Sudan – 24.6 million people – do not have enough food.” “diplomatic efforts have often been sidelined by other crises”

There's no pilot shortage. Just a shortage of pilots willing to work for meagre wages.

Reducing Canada’s dependence on the US will require more, not less, engagement with the world. Engagements that show Canada is willing to pull its weight. Are these the actions of a government that will truly commit to doing what it takes to deal with our new reality? www.cbc.ca/news/science...

In the lead-up to the #canpoli election there'd been concerns around AI-generated content There hasn't been much of it -- publicly AI is being used by parties behind the scenes, and researchers say it could be feeding misinformation in private channels My latest: www.ctvnews.ca/vancouver/ar...

Watch this video of @carolecadwalla.bsky.social’s new TED Talk. TED has been a cheerleader for the technologies that have destroyed democracy and our social fabric, and Carole does not hold back. She is so courageous … and speaks the truth. www.ted.com/talks/carole...

“Let's be honest: new pipelines require massive public handouts, trample on Indigenous sovereignty and mean more climate disasters hitting our cities and towns in years to come” “Plante said the federal gov’t needs ‘greater vision and action’ rather than ‘entertaining ideas for more pipelines.’”

Only one way to find out: leave it for a couple decades and see who fixes it first.

Important thread. Complying with these requirements harms patients and, I would argue, undermines the scientific validity of the research.

Our team lead @sethdklein.bsky.social is featured in this must-read article on how Canada's economic wartime footing can help fight Trump's trade chaos and threats to our sovereignty. @desmog.bsky.social www.desmog.com/2025/04/08/c...

The state of Canada’s “universal healthcare” after decades of neo-liberal gov’t: My 90-yr old mum’s private doctor, which she needs due to the doctor shortage in our collapsing public system, is upping his annual fee by $600. Now totalling $3,600. She pays her taxes. She’s already PAID for care.

Carney: “We want to dominate the market on conventional energy. To do that in the *long term* it needs to be lower carbon on…scope one and scope two emissions.” A disaster for the future of our planet. Scope 3 being where 80% of emissions occur. This is increasing O&G production. Shame.

It’s the pattern that’s disturbing. Authoritarians attack and undermine institutions of truth: the media, education and research, the legal system. It’s about disarming societal checks on power. That’s what Poilievre is doing.

Whatever happens with the tariffs hour-to-hour, this all still applies.

Disdain for journalists is fascism 101. During the convoy occupation, journalists were physically attacked by occupiers & threats were thrown at them. Poilievre has directly targeted journalists, by name, for criticizing him. He wants us to distrust media so he can create the narrative.

Asylum seekers are already arriving in Canada from the US citing gender-based persecution, among other issues. We saw similar debates during Trump’s first term, and, as with everything else, it’s more pressing now.

👇

Yep, @mark-carney.bsky.social ‘s claim that we can decrease emissions while increase O&G production is misleading. Doing something doesn’t cut it. We need rapid reductions in Earth’s emissions, or we’re headed to a catastrophic future.

“The study also found just over a quarter of First Nations parents had their child or children put in an out-of-home placement — a rate nearly 6 times higher than their non-First Nations counterparts. About 10% had their parental rights terminated, compared to <2% for non-First Nations parents”

Yes, I think this is broadly right. It's also worth considering the purpose behind these public communications and whether they are achieving that. @stephaniecarvin.bsky.social and @leahwest-nsl.bsky.social and I just recorded an episode of Secure Line out later this week on this issue.

A breath of fresh air to read The O&G industry & their captured policians are setting the narrative this election, using the US crisis to get voter buy in on their disasterous, Trump-aligned agenda An aggressive energy transition needs to be part of dealing with the US Power lines, not pipelines!

It's not disruption that's being prosecuted in this country. It's dissent. This week's column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

So heartening and uplifting to see all the protests across the US today. Fight the good fight, American friends ✊❤️

I can’t help seeing the similarities between the oil and gas industry in this country and an escalating abusive partner. If we don’t break free and keep ourselves beyond their ability to exert control over us, they’re not going to stop until we’re dead.

Where we’re headed: “At 3C of global heating, climate damage cannot be insured against, covered by governments, or adapted to” We’re not doing enough to avoid this future. In an election in 2025 our leading politicians are still talking about expanding fossil fuels. It’s mad.
