1940s: Esau Jenkins founded a company to shuttle Black residents from the segregated islands of South Carolina to Charleston. During trips, he taught the Constitution and other knowledge needed to pass the discriminatory literacy test that was required for voter registration. #BlackHistoryMonth

Safe Bus, a Black-owned bus company, was founded in 1926 to connect Black neighborhoods to Winston-Salem, NC’s streetcars, which were largely in white areas. Once the largest Black-owned transportation system in the world, Safe Bus carried 8000 passengers/day. #BlackHistoryMonth

In 1923, Garrett Morgan invented an early version of the traffic light. The three-phase traffic signal included a warning light to tell drivers that they would soon need to stop—similar to today's yellow light. #BlackHistoryMonth

Nashville, Tennessee, a longtime NACTO affiliate member, is now officially a full member! The city has recently made transportation a top priority, developing the "Choose How You Move" program and making major investments in sidewalks, signals, service, and safety.

In 1925, A. Phillip Randolph organized Black workers into the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first Black labor union in the U.S. Later, as a Civil Rights Movement leader, he chaired the 1963 March on Washington. #BlackHistoryMonth

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Granville Woods invented numerous railroad systems that are still in use today, including an electrical system trains use to communicate their location and avoid collisions. #BlackHistoryMonth

In 1870, Charlton Tandy organized boycotts and direct actions to integrate St. Louis streetcars. After an 1868 law prohibited segregation, racist habits still remained, prompting Tandy to forcibly stop streetcars so Black riders could board and ride safely. #BlackHistoryMonth

In the 1880s, Matthew Cherry patented improvements to the velocipede, a pedal-less predecessor to modern bikes. He also invented the tricycle, which in our time has evolved into a more stable and accessible option for many people to travel than standard two-wheel bikes. #BlackHistoryMonth

1854: Elizabeth Jennings Graham was kicked off two trolleys on her way to church—first a half-empty white-only car, then a car for Black residents because it was too full. Her resulting lawsuit led to the desegregation of public transit in New York City. #BlackHistoryMonth

Cities can use flexible materials to improve their roadways and public spaces quickly. Conventional construction projects can have long timelines, limited funding streams, and complex regulatory processes, challenging cities to deliver improvements as quickly as they would like.
