A lesson for the government: mimicking Reform anti-migrant sentiment is unlikely to sway voters back to you. You play on their terms, you lose. Look to Spain instead. Pedro Sánchez has defended immigration as crucial for prosperity - and gained the fastest-growing eurozone economy in the process.

I don't think any of us are going to quickly forget how thoughtlessly Merz broke the anti-fascist firewall. He's to be treated with deep scepticism. But his opening comments are reassuring. Germany's "absolute priority" is to "achieve real independence from the US".

It will be the most celebrated obit on the planet.

28th February 2025. Our FIRST 24-hour economic blackout.

Brexiters put the frighteners up the Tory leadership during the 2010s by voting for the Farage party in local and EU elections. We Rejoiners must do the same to Starmer by voting for pro-EU parties in the local elections. We've talked the talk. Now, let's walk the walk by voting. #VoteRejoin

"A YouGov poll on 21 January asked ‘Who would you rather have as a closer trading partner to the UK…?’ Of all adults, 53% said the EU, and 21% said the US. The younger you were, or if you were a woman, the more likely you were to say the EU. Even 20% of Reform UK supporters said the EU!"

🚨 "With Trump threatening new tariffs as soon as this week, the government should listen to voters and break down trade barriers with our largest market before pursuing deals elsewhere." @pimlicat.bsky.social on our new polling in the Observer 👇

Trump is a feral menace threatening our trade, our security and our democracy. To NOT prioritise trade and improved relations with our own continent over trying to deal with that loose cannon would be completely mad. Luckily most of us aren’t. Even in Clacton. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Donald Trump back in the White House must see the UK rejoin Europe | Martin Roche @cluthaman.bsky.social

NEW: A deal to allow Iceland to join the EU swiftly could pave the way for a relatively quick agreement for an independent Scotland, an expert has said 🗣️ 'If a country more than 10 times smaller than Scotland by population sees political benefits from being in the club, why wouldn’t Scotland?'

Absolutely this from Ed Davey 👏

In Scotland voters increasingly dislike right wing politics. In stark contrast, voters in England remain very attracted. In 2024 only 20% of voters chose a right wing party in Scotland, compared with 41% in England. And England always gets to choose who rules in Westminster. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇪🇺 #YesScots

While we’re banning books… Finland is teaching children in school how to recognize fake news and propaganda as part of critical thinking and civic responsibility. Some of this will seem very familiar. Be. Like. Finland.

Labour continues to search for crumbs of economic growth on the floor while ignoring the cookie jar in front of its nose: the EU

Utterly predictable.

Do you want 38 Degrees to campaign on rejoining the EU? If so, you might want to have your say here --> speakout.38degrees.org.uk/surveys/4661

Great summary by @pollymackenzie.bsky.social of what gov't should do on the EU vs what it feels it can do. Important PS: opinion is moving by the day and a time will come when something bolder than a "reset" is politically possible. So maybe firm "noes", "nevers", and "red lines" are a mistake. ~AA

Why is the government not capable wiping the floor with Nigel Farage every single day like this? Alastair Campbell effortlessly destroys him over his Brexit legacy which by almost every economic and financial measure has been disastrous for the country

In a few hours time, Fiona Bruce will defend having Nigel Farage on #Bbcqt for the 38th time, by saying "He's an elected MP. We have to invite him"... ... as if Question Time's constant platforming of him for years, isn't part of the campaign that made him an MP. 😑

A reminder that Scotland has ALWAYS had publicly owned Water and @thesnp.bsky.social brought Rail into public ownership in 2022. Our Scottish Government is ultimately responsible for both. When Labour crows about "Great British" they mean England. The Tories deliberately got this wrong as well.
