The Case For Second Chances

Sitting back because as I have maintained for years now, Defund was the basement. Centrists and many liberals will rue the day they acted like the demand was *revolutionary.* It was sensible and always considered a step on the way to abolition.

PHILLY DA LARRY KRASNER: “We have the lowest homicides in 50+ years… our state prison population has gone from 13,000 down to 9,000… this notion that if you lock up more people you’ll be safe has always been crap.” (cc: Sexton, Lamberth, @CoreCivic)

TIL: 80% of people put on Louisiana’s death row were later exonerated. “The law is a ass - a idiot”.

stop offering suggestions and start actually organizing.

They should make it a tenant coop every single time.

Damn. Starting to feel like appealing to the evidence might not be enough to change policy… inquest.org/our-evidence...

The reality is that you don't need to go to El Salvador to see absolutely horrifying conditions in jails and prisons.

Lil Durk’s longtime DJ, Maurice “DJ Reese” Davis, says the rapper’s absence from Chicago is already being felt. “It’s a void there,” said Davis. “It’s not ever gonna be another Durk. You can kind of feel it.” thetriibe.com/2025/04/fede...

They are importing more racist white people to supplement all of the racist white people already here.

This was shared. A site that some folks have put together to pressure institutional investors to divest from Tesla: divestfromtesla.com

“The system breaks you down, then offers no solutions.” Benny Lopez lives with the trauma of solitary confinement. IL prisons isolate people for decades. Urge your lawmakers to pass SB 65|HB 1428: bit.ly/NelsonMandel...

My latest is a conversation with @sarahkendzior.bsky.social about dehumanization, fighting back, and what the oligarchs can't take away from us. "They want us to forget our own humanity, to surrender our humanity and to not know what it means to be a human being."

If these abductions do not push every single one of you to question the existence of immigrant "detention" centers and the conditions of ALL prisons and jails, then you are really doing life wrong. Conditions in detention, jails, and prisons in the U.S. ARE TERRIBLE. They are awful every single day.

The Nazis also targeted queer people for withdrawal of basic care and eventual extermination. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Can't wait to read this book from @micahh.bsky.social, @marpark.bsky.social, and @kamaufranklin.bsky.social! It's full of stories from a movement in motion and offers lessons for everyone facing criminalization for trying to protect people and planet from harm. Out soon from @haymarketbooks.org!

And....the hits keep coming!

What the hell! The judges are just going along with this BS. 🤬🤬🤬🤬

“We are at a moment right now where people are asking themselves why can’t the Democratic Party defend this assault on democracy . . . and I would submit to you that if you can’t draw the line at genocide, you probably can’t draw the line at democracy.” - Ta-Nehisi Coates

Can I do everything? NO. Can I do something? Yes.

Finland just seems to get it right - education, housing. #TaxTheRich #ClassWar

If you ever wondered why you should be concerned abt how the criminal legal system has been disappearing ppl, including innocent ppl, for more than all of our lifetimes, this is why. IL leads the world in exonerations. When we allow the disappearing of anyone, we allow the disappearing of everyone.

To be clear, there's no reason to have any of these people incarcerated, whatever the conditions or oversight (which are never good). Oversight of jail conditions has not resulted in fewer jail deaths.

anyway i'm making some real cool zines to process all this political and personal turmoil so you should really check out my snail mail zine club #zines #queerart #transart #protestart ko-fi.com/s/dcc28f448f

If we're resurrecting the "defund" discourse again, what I'll contribute is that there's actually a pretty elegant overlap between the straightforward grassroots demand ("stop killing us") and the policy proposal. Reducing police headcount -> reducing police contact -> reducing police violence.

“Imagine a world where there are tool libraries in every neighborhood, and they’re third spaces for people to hang out without having to spend money,” she said. “There are potlucks to share food, and urban farms.” truthout.org/articles/no-...

you can always just try shit.

Is this something YOU are doing? - is a very good question.

As authoritarian forces try to separate our communities, we must act to defend each other, knowing that our fights — and our collective survival — are intertwined. truthout.org/articles/saf...

Each of them could turn their townhalls into small d democratic people's assemblies where people deliberate on a list of immediate actions that can be taken if they win the House. USE THIS TIME NOW to do this. Invite constituents to weigh in. Capture all feedback and come up with a list of 5 things.

Life without parole sentences are just the death penalty in slow motion; all the administrators just watching people die day by day.

Thinking about interviewing Monica Cosby for Let This Radicalize You and how she explained that in prison she and her friends celebrated every holiday and even made up holidays because under soul crushing conditions, conjuring up joy is survival work.

Wait until people hear that lots of people are in prison because of defunct registries and discredited police. Some for life. Some have been executed. www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/...

Question for the people in the back...

We've all been watching the same bullshit. It's regular people and the *groups* that have been carrying the fight. The vast majority of Dem electeds in DC are FOLLOWERS. They FOLLOW the people.

The TRiiBE reached out to Gov. J.B. Pritzker about if and how he plans to remedy the impact of the new arrivals on the Black community, but representatives with his office did not respond to the inquiries. thetriibe.com/2025/04/some...

fun historical fact: among the core political forces in the development of mass incarceration was the "Victims' Rights Movement". Its first major legislative national legislative victory was under President Reagan. The prison population doubled under his administration.

NEW — Today, Gov. JB Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson applauded a new Northwestern University study that found the state-funded Chicago CRED Peacekeepers Program led to a 41% reduction in victimizations within violence “hotspots.” thetriibe.com/2025/04/prit...
