Yesterday was really busy so it's worth saying again. The scope of the DOGE really shrank in terms of what was proposed to what was in the EO set it up yesterday... from $2 trillion in cuts to, apparently, a more narrow focus on government technology.... www.nextgov.com/digital-gove...

A reminder that the first Trump admin tried to use the existing framework of the EOP to 'reinvent government,' and there's a reason you probably don't remember the attempt.

Not the most consequential of things, but as @amac0.bsky.social notes this whole idea of 'DOGE' just stepping into the U.S. Digital Service wrapper as 'U.S. DOGE Service' makes it the "U.S. Department of Government Efficiency Service."

Likely going to be an interesting debate on the left over whether Democrats took too big of a swing at 'Big Tech' in the first place — or if it was a "you come at the king you best not miss" situation.

Though he's perhaps saved by the fact that the FCC has never really had a formal role in the TikTok debates.

Carr made warning of the dangers of TikTok central to his whole Washington identity, so now that he's the Trump-appointed FCC chair things are going to get interesting.

I think we're going to look back at the issuance of Biden's AI executive order in October 2023 as a surprisingly significant moment in the political timeline.

This is being treated as a big deal and it's potentially an even bigger deal than that. House Oversight is an enormously powerful tool in skilled hands. www.politico.com/news/2024/12...

As with DOJ antitrust chief, Trump picks as FTC chair someone seemingly quite willing to question ‘Big Tech.’

Trump says he will name current FTC commissioner Andrew Ferguson to replace Lina Khan as FTC Chair

Thinking "if this were summer it'd still be light out" over and over again is such a good use of my limited human hours on this planet.

Interesting twist. "The Oversight Committee is among the most storied, and partisan, bodies in Congress." It also, thanks to Whitewater (!), has an outsized budget — which would give Ocasio-Cortez a lot of resources with which to work. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/06/n...

On the 'Democrats leaving X' discussion:

BREAKING: US President-Elect Donald Trump names David O. Sacks as the “White House A.I. & Crypto Czar.”

My one Billy Long story is that early on in Congress I asked him if he tweeted for himself (he is, I think he’d admit himself, a colorful character) and his response was something along the lines of, ‘Of course — only Billy Long sounds like Billy Long!’

It's a little interesting Trump named his DOJ antitrust chief six weeks out. Last time it was March. Slater's a known quantity, but it's also a higher-profile job than in '16. Locking it in arguably spares them months of lobbying for someone else.

For what it's worth, Trump's pick to head DOJ antitrust, Gail Slater, worked at the FTC as an advisor to *Democratic* commissioner Julie Brill — though as what's been described me as a contrarian-in-residence. Antitrust remains one of the strangest beats.

The picking of a new pope has nothing on the maneuverings around who'll sit on the Federal Trade Commission.

Outgoing Transpo Sec Pete Buttigieg says he finds our air travel behavior funny: "[W]hen it’s time to board, everybody can’t wait, as if the cabin was the sweetest place on earth. And then upon arrival, everybody can’t wait to get off, as if the cabin were on fire." www.nytimes.com/2024/12/04/t...

Nestled in this announcement that Gail Slater will head up DOJ antitrust are some clues on Trump's current thinking on competition policy: "Big Tech has run wild for years... Gail will help ensure that our competition laws are enforced..."

Slater's day job is as an advisor in Vance's Senate office. It's maybe glib to say, but Vance is showing early signs of putting his stamp on the Trump admin's economic agenda the way Elizabeth Warren did on Biden's.

Interesting pick. Slater is seen very much as part of the 'antitrust curious' wing of the Republican party a la JD Vance.

NEW: Bluesky has seen massive growth in the weeks following the US election. There are 24 million users on the social media platform. With great engagement comes great responsibility, which means Bluesky CEO @jay.bsky.team has a lot to do. She sat down with WIRED to talk about it.
