3 months before I move back to London (after 15 years abroad) the wonderful @jaxsilvester.bsky.social snapped this photo of me as I was checking what stop we were getting off at 🫶

So much fun last night at the shipwrecks and mermaids themed launch for @kwebberwrites.bsky.social new book CAPTAINS OF FATE, catching up with YA Fantasy friends and drinking out of dead men's skulls ☠️

London book haul: 🍜 Wagamamas cookbook from my mother-in-law 🥪 The new paperback of SANDWICH 💖 And Cameron's new YA novel A FLASH OF NEON (out 1 May) Lucky me!!!

Reading an article about stress and it goes on to describe the fundamental premise of GOOD GIRLS DIE LAST. It's the little things that eventually make you snap...

The Saturday culture supplement in The Guardian. THIS is how you start an article...

Only in the UK do you pop into a church and find yourself staring at Henry VIIIs signature, oldest Saxon cross sculpture, 12th and 14th Century paintings, and tiles that date back to the Crusades...accompanied by a contemporary stained glass window of Florence Nightingale 💗 (Romsey Abbey, Hampshire)

Books have to be written by humans.

Top tip, when you wake up 5am with hormonal headaches instead of scrolling through social media and being a whiny cow in victim mode...you can just do yoga. Swapped my usual routine of moaning, for 35 mins of yoga just now, and the headache has gone. Healthy people were right 🙄

Just got a Google alert that the hardback of my book, Good Girls Die Last, is being sold at a used bookshop in Nigeria. Awesome! It's not been available to buy there, so if you're in Nigeria and waiting to read it I guess check it out... novelsbookscollection.com/product/good...

These mega corps are the reason America is struggling. $278,000,000,000 in avoided tax. Not the poor. Not immigrants. Not workers. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

We'd all benefit from an industry that's more direct and trying less to be 'nice' (while not). Most of the frustrations in this business are authors not knowing where they stand and industry professionals being underpaid and undervalued. You can't succeed in business by pussyfooting about.

A new week, a new opportunity to discover a favourite book! - Michael

All my books are just 99p-£2.99 on Kindle right now, plus all of them (except Good Girls Die Last) are FREE on Kindle Unlimited!! Easiest place to check them all out in one place is: njsimmonds.com/bookshop/

I don't think people want to hear this because it's so damn depressing - but in a way it should also be a comfort, because if you can make peace with these emotions then being a writer becomes a lot more bearable.

I keep seeing people talking about how tough it is querying and I'm going to say something direct that may not sit well with some of you: Querying is a dress rehearsal for publishing The rejection, ghosting, stress, ambiguity, and disappointment continues at every stage. It's part of the job.

No retrograde from today until 4 May. That's 3 entire weeks to make sure everything you want to happen will happen. I have three major (literal life-changing) things happening in that time, so I couldn't be happier!

I had such a brilliant time talking to the amazing Polly Lavarello about making money through creativity on her podcast. It's not often authors talk about the commercial side of what we do, so have a listen (or just read the transcript). pollylavarello.com/pay-the-bill...?

#PopUpOfTheWeek is from WHERE OH WHERE IS KIPPER’S BEAR?, paper engineered by Ariel Apte and written & illustrated by Mick Inkpen. This simple pop-up story was an Emmett family favourite and the phrase ‘pinky purple Bleeper People’ has stayed with us long after the kids grew up. #KidLitUK

Me and my 20 balls of wool when I realised I couldn't crochet after 10 mins of trying...

I JUST SENT MY FOURTH THRILLER OFF TO MY EDITOR!!! Here we go...

I have some time today, so if you're at the early stages of writing/trying to get published...ask me anything. Happy to help!

About time. That child came from the mother, let the baby carry whatever name the woman chooses to have. If the father wants to be part of that then he can change his name to match...

I've been chatting to a lot of authors entering the query trenches this week...so here is a little thread from me that I hope will help 📚🧵

If you think querying your book is hard, you haven't tried finding a family house to rent in North London. Man, it's pure Hunger Games out here. I had to write a fucking personal statement and wait for an interview for one place so I could have the pleasure of paying THEM! wtf

😁

It doesn't take a lot to get me excited while doing self-edits...
