Still need more time to process the new Wasted Laika 丢莱卡 album released a few weeks ago, "红蜻蜓,绿孔雀". It's a beautifully crafted album, which deserves many listening sessions. I especially recommend "迟到冠军", "红蜻蜓", "莱卡", but really all the songs are beautiful: open.spotify.com/intl-fr/albu...

Wuhan punk legends SMZB new single, "The Last of the Mohicans" just dropped on their new bandcamp page ahead of their new album - after they got their rights back from the label. The song is dedicated to Ukraine, 3 years after its invasion by Russia. smzb.bandcamp.com/track/the-la...

The Xi’an excellent post-punk band FAZI will perform in Paris on May 30th!

First press review of 2025 on Sinophone music, with the last part dedicated to the CCTV Spring Festical Gala (guess who filmed the Yangge Bots part?): scream4life.hypotheses.org/4407

Happy lunar new year and CCTV Spring Festival Gala, with this year best song, “China Fun”

Last Sinophone music press review of the year (December): reviews of Clockenflap, David Bowie performing in Hong Kong 41 years ago, why Taiwan pop culture is less popular in China, and more: scream4life.hypotheses.org/4340

As usual, here's a list of Sinophone songs which defined my year 2024, in no particular order. 2024 was a year of extraordinary live performances, we lost one of China's most important rock'n'roll figure, Liu Yuan, and we got great new songs and albums: scream4life.hypotheses.org/4277

一路走好 Obituary by Liu Yuan family, Cui Jian and all the members of the band. On the right, detail of an iconic photo, Liu Yuan and Cui Jian on Tiananmen Square in 1989.

The legendary Chinese rock and roll and jazz saxophonist Liu Yuan 刘元 passed away at 64. He was Cui Jian 崔健 saxophonist, he opened the CD Café, a safe haven for rockers and punks in the 1990s, and the East Shore Live Jazz Cafe in Beijing: tw.news.yahoo.com/%E6%85%9F-%E...

The post-hardcore band Catscare - with Nic from The Lovesong and Nicole from My Little Airport - performing tonight at The Aftermath in Hong Kong. A great band which should play more often.

“El Pueblo Unido Jamás Será Vencido”, C.S.B.Q. singing “萨尔瓦多”, their tribute song to Salvador Allende, yesterday at Taipei’s Revolver

Tonight the Changsha oi-punk band C.S.B.Q 长沙暴青 will perform in Taipei’s Revolver, before touring SouthernTaiwan. Their song “未来国家的宝藏” is one of the most beautiful punk song on contemporary Chinese working-class: youtu.be/GIVfZUttnjg?...

The November press review on Sinophone music is out! This month Universal Music signed agreements with iQiyi and Modern Sky, there was the Taiwan Golden Indie Music Awards ceremony, and an interesting article on underground rave parties in Changchun: scream4life.hypotheses.org/4247

FAZI 法茲 performing in Hong Kong’s Clockenflap. I’ll be honest there’s nothing better than Chinese post-punk/rock.

Typical Mongkok

The Chengdu poets Hiperson 海朋森 a.k.a the best Chinese post-punk band performed yesterday at Clockenflap festival in Hong Kong

It's a great day for Chinese indie-rock: after three years, (my favourite) Beijing post-punk band Wasted Laika 丟來卡 released a new single, "白夜狐步舞 ", before releasing a new album this winter (so we're one month away from a new Wasted Laika album!) www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-gi...

Great punk festival yesterday in Hong Kong, with a lot of South Asian bands (below is Banana Is The Bastard from the Philippines). A true “mega event”.

A Hong Kong patriotic song for October 1st, a hip-hop musical telling an ancient China story, the Guangxi indie band Varihnaz in the New York Times and the aftermath of Ye's event in China, all of that (and more) in my new Monthly Press Review on Chinese music: scream4life.hypotheses.org/4220

The new Sinophone Studies reader is out now (“Sinophone Studies Across Disiciplines”), edited by Howard Chiang and Shu-mei Shih. I’m very happy to have contributed a chapter on Beyond - I had a blast writing it, and it’s a paper I’m particularly proud of!

New August issue of my monthly press review on Sinophone music: another China/Taiwan controversy, this time involving the Chengdu rapper Wang Yitai, a Cantopop musical, Indonesian punk-rockers in Taiwan or the identity of metal band Zuriaake's frontman: scream4life.hypotheses.org/4108

The July monthly press review is here! A Taiwanese version of The Big Band, Beijing's Dada 12th anniversary party, the Golden Melody Awards winner (and controversy), a Korean indie rock band banned in China and more! scream4life.hypotheses.org/4063

A Beyond copycat in China trending on TikTok, Joyce Jonathan wins "Ride the Wave" 2024, Taiwanese bands caught in the cross-strait crossfire, Yuyintang closing in Shanghai... All that and more in June's monthly press review: scream4life.hypotheses.org/4010

Yesterday Chengdu post-punk band Hiperson 海朋森 played at Taipei’s The Wall in front of a full house. Hiperson’s guitarist told the audience that he grew up listening to Taiwan folk songs. The band was super excited to be in Taipei, and the audience was moved to tears by the Sichuan poets.

The May monthly press review is here! A lot of MayDay 五月天 (well it’s May), some news from Miserable Faith 痛苦的信仰 and an article on Teresa Teng’s last days: scream4life.hypotheses.org/3932

Wong Ka-kui’s grave, Hong Kong legendary rock band Beyond’s late singer, was vandalized by a 15 year old. The clips of the attack show a man, who calls himself “Society Destroyer”, pouring a bottle of Coca-Cola onto the memorial plaque, licking up the spilled liquid: www.scmp.com/news/hong-ko...

The end (?) of the MayDay lip-sync controversy? Shanghai's law enforcement authorities have cleared the band of lip-syncing in a series of concerts in Shanghai in November last year: m.thepaper.cn/detail/27338...

Another monthly press review on Sinophone music for April: the 回春丹 Taiwan controversy, MayDay offering its help after the Hualien earthquake, or the closure of another Hong Kong live venue: scream4life.hypotheses.org/3890

It's time for the monthly press review on Sinophone music: a rumor about Mayday next performance in Beijing, an interview with a Shenzhen hardcore band, the Cantopop sensation Mirror and Chinese indie-rock bands touring the world: scream4life.hypotheses.org/3775

MayDay 五月天 rumored to play in Beijing in May (pun not intended), several months after the lip-syncing scandal. Guess it was not that bad after all: news.tvbs.com.tw/english/2424...

I'm trying something new: a (hopefully) monthly press review of things I read on indie music in the Sinophone world, so I can finally close some tabs on my phone: scream4life.hypotheses.org/3684
