In both Hebrew (חֵפֶץ) and Arabic the word for "desire, wish" underwent semantic widening to just mean "matter, thing". The root sh-y-ʾ gives the verb shāʾ as in mā shāʾ Allāh (what God wills) and "thing" (shayʾ).

Are baseball idioms annoying to learn for non-native speakers? When I think about how much effort it would take to explain any of them, how ubiquitous they are, and how boring the game is, I'd think they're pretty annoying.

If you want to talk to an LLM in Arabic, and really, who doesn't, I strongly recommend Mistral Saba. I give data sets to some other models and ask them something in Arabic and they'll respond in the language of the data set (English) — really bad. Saba actually has intelligent comments.
