It’s not a coincidence that the power of district courts to enter nationwide injunctions has been gutted during the reign of the most authoritarian president our country has ever had. #scotus

Disappointing (but not surprising) to see this bill advancing.

People are tired of a status quo that isn’t working for them. Zohran Mamdani’s campaign has sent shockwaves across the country and shown what’s possible when candidates have the courage to stay true to their values and speak authentically to working people.

Ken, let me introduce you to @wilsonforseattle.bsky.social

People believe better is possible They’re tired of settling for less

This is why she ought to be Seattle’s next mayor. (Well, one among many reasons!)

I tend to agree :)

More nightmarish cruelty from SCOTUS and Trump.

I wrote this op-ed about why improving the Seattle City Attorney’s Office requires more than simply restoring community court: we need to expand the use of prefiling diversion. It is more effective, costs less money, and avoids the harmful consequences of prosecution.

By Dan Beekman: "State Rep. Darya Farivar, the first Iranian American woman elected to the state Legislature, said she and other Iranian Americans are “bracing for impact” from a U.S.-Iran conflict."

Providing sanctuary protection for people targeted by the federal government requires extreme vigilance in how local governments collect and maintain information about their residents. Shield laws are well intentioned, but authoritarians like Trump are not going to be deterred by them.

My latest @theurbanist.org on the expansion of Flock license plate readers in WA state...and how the data is being used to assist ICE/DHS and search for people who have received abortions. An audit of the King County Housing Authority's Flock data shows it's likely been accessed for both purposes.

This is the same ineffective technology that the Seattle City Council just approved for purchase and use by SPD. Props to @alexis4seattle.bsky.social for being the lone vote against the bill.

What happens when you trust low-income families with no-strings-attached cash? Tacoma's $500/month guaranteed income experiment shattered myths about poverty and public assistance. #gbi #ubi #basicincome

Cannot be overstated how deeply wrong this is. Apple Health access for immigrants in Washington is one of the things that makes our state great. Now, a public service that’s supposed to protect health and safety could cause devastating consequences for thousands of people in our community.

Completely unacceptable.

I wrote this op-ed about why the Seattle City Attorney’s Office must do everything it possibly can to fight Trump’s rapid escalation towards authoritarianism. See y’all on the streets today! #nokings #seattle

Fire these cops. Hope this person is okay.

Immigrants detained at the Krome Detention Center in Florida are protesting being held in deplorable conditions by making a giant SOS sign that can be seen from above.

Thanks, @ronpdavis.bsky.social!

A bill for the City Attorney to sue “graffiti taggers” for the costs of cleaning up grafitti. This is a waste of time and resources that will further divert attention away from critical issues that the CAO should be focusing more on like wage theft.

Overcoming SPOG as an obstacle to reforming SPD is a fight that Seattle must win. I wrote this op-ed about how the City Attorney’s Office can champion this critical issue.

Proud to live in a city, county, and state that are all on this list!

Pro-LGBTQ Protesters Stuck Outside Barricades As Far-Right "Rattle In Seattle" Took Over City Hall publicola.com/2025/05/28/p...

Read it and weep: “Seattle’s funding for sweeps is over twice as much as it spends on homeless shelters.” The third image is just so damning.

As much as I loved spending the afternoon in court fighting for folks at Cal Anderson to be released from jail, this situation was completely avoidable—Seattle *never* should have granted a permit for anti-trans bigots to spew their rhetoric at the PNW’s most iconic safe haven for LGBTQ folks.

Public defenders make good prosecutors.

A lot to unpack: (1) a *pickleball complex* is replacing the only lot in Seattle where unhoused folks can legally reside in their RVs; (2) LIHI had remarkable success at placing residents into permanent housing; and (3) despite the headline, the property owner deserves praise for supporting LIHI.

Nathan was often behind the wheel of the 7 Line when I rode it to and from work at my first job after law school. He *always* greeted me and everyone else on the bus with kind words and an even kinder smile. A true gem.

We can’t arrest our way out of homelessness. To build communities that are safe across Washington and advance justice for all, we must invest in reaching people with the resources they need, when they need it.

People of Seattle, this crisis care center in Capitol Hill would be such an amazing resource to the community. Shame on the business owners who blame the people most harmed by our society, instead of choosing to engage in actual solutions and blaming the powers that be.

I lived on Capitol Hill off+on from 2007-2020, there were never "kids playing in vibrant streets" like 1 commenter said, but there were always people in crisis who could have used a place to go & that problem only intensified. Time to stop listening to business fiefdoms & serve people who need help.

Here’s the argument! Critical issue at stake involving fairness, the integrity of the criminal legal system, and the presumption of innocence.

Weird how treating addiction like an illness always works better than treating it like a border war. "A variety of factors likely contributed to the decline, but expanded access to naloxone and addiction treatment over the past year have made a huge difference locally, Finegood said."

I wrote an op-ed on why Seattle should pass legislation similar to the ordinance Spokane recently enacted to protect unhoused folks from discrimination when applying for jobs.

If anyone wants a refresher, here’s Ann Davison’s “walk away” video from 2020 when she became a Republican during Trump’s first term. The “walk away” movement was founded by Brandon Straka who participated in the January 6 riot and was convicted (and then pardoned) for his role in it.

Tent City 4 To Move as Planned—For Now City officials say the long-planned relocation will only last until they can find a more "appropriate" site. publicola.com/2025/05/17/t...

We learned a lot at the community forum: www.thestranger.com/news/2025/05...

Huge respect to the residents of TC4, SHARE/WHEEL, and their allies who fought for this.

As somone who regularly works for clients in treatment at King County’s Crisis Response Center in Kirkland, I can’t emphasize enough the importance of having a comparable facility in Capitol Hill.

This is America.

Op-Ed: Five Ways to Lower Rents in Seattle www.theurbanist.org/2025/05/15/o...

On day 1 as Seattle City Attorney I’ll propose legislation banning algorithmic price fixing in the rental market, just like the ordinances that San Francisco and Philadelphia passed last fall. Critical issue for housing affordability!
