The melting snow means Cladonia lichens are back in their modest protubering elegance. Take, for example, the simple class of (I think) Cladonia cornuta, or "Bighorn lichen." 150 Mile House, BC 🌿 #fungifriends

#lichenGBI Second time I’ve found the #lichenicolous #fungifriends Lichenochora galligena on Physcia adscendens. This time from North Somerset. On a fallen Ash twig in Midsomer Norton.

We must fight back.

How about the specimen of Sphaerophorus! I am learning towards S. venerabilis, but you can set us straight. It's from Mary's Peak in the Coastal Range of Oregon.

Any image editing experts here? Colour variation is partially due to moisture and does not really bother me so much. But the variation in brightness annoys me. Any ideas how to tackle this? Histogram equalisation did not help much. Any suggestions are welcome! #ImageJ

I followed this Rusaviska elegans #lichen for 1 year and 1 month, taking regular photos (with my cellphone). This is the preliminary result:

Physconia distorta #lichen

#lichenGBI #Lichenicolous #fungifriends Illosporium carneum. Noticed and identified by Neil Sanderson while identifying a mature Peltigera didactyla (without soredia) for me. From the track verge to an ex-sand/gravel pit nature reserve in Warwickshire.

A few nice things from Holkham dunes today - Physcia aipolia on a fence rail, Ramalina fastigiata, Mollisia sp (ascomycete fungus) on dead pine, and Peltigera canina. What an amazing place for lichens/ fungi…

Lichenfall from the old horse chestnut trees. The variety never ceases to amaze me. I wonder how much of this variety is influnced by being a 5 min walk to the ocean and frequently wreathed in its mists? #lichen #lichenfriends #salishsea

I am happy to share that I will be teaching a field-based plant identification course near Portland, OR, this season. We will meet at different wildflower hotspots monthly throughout the spring-summer season. Join us! jesseedmiller.com/plant-identification-in-the-pacific-northwest

One way to describe the pic is 'Ramalina #Lichen' (probably R. farinacea, though to be precise it's mixed with Xanthoria parietina). But here's the classic figure/background dilemma: the massive yellow glow comes from another lichen, Candelaria concolor (called Candleflame #Lichen for a reason)

Currently in New Zealand and blown away by the lichen assemblages here. Many familiar genera, but new species to me and boy are those macrolichens BIG. Here are Sticta latifrons, Yarrumia colensoi, and Stereocaulon ramulosum from the Mt Aspiring national park.

There was a nice range of acid bark lichens in the sunshine at Borrowdale yesterday. Including Bryoria fuscescens, Sphaerophorus globosus and Ochrolechia tartarea.

So here is a recently observed specimen from Crater Lake National Park here in Oregon. Anyone want to put a name to it? I don't think this will be too hard. The Genus should be easy. And by the way, you gotta love your parks! #lichens #lichenologists #NPS #NationalParks

Male Juniper Haircap Moss (Polytrichum juniperinum) plants are conspicuous here in western Montana come late March. Found in just about every State north of Mexico including Canada. Mostly found growing in dry mineral soil.

Support for student/enthusiasts! NWL is offering ~10, $150 awards to help student/non-student lichen folk with need presenting talk or poster. Must also be registered with NWSA for the meeting. Have abstract ready before applying-Deadline 2/17 northwest-lichenologists.wildapricot.org/event-5957694

Enchylium tenax var. ceranoides on a vegetated path at Brettenham church this morning.

Dark AND misty!? I'd love to creep around

Lungwort (Lobaria pulmonaria) is large #lichen that can be seen in winter even with snow covered ground. Lung-like in form. Found in Pacific Northwest, upper Midwest, Appalachians and Northeast. Look for it on moss covered rock in shaded mature forest (Brodo, Sharnoff, Sharnoff 2001).

My brain is a machine that turns ideas into forgotten ideas

On birch bark at Kelling Heath - Normandina pulchella, Jamesiella anastomosans, Fuscidea lightfootii. And a fruiting Hypotrachyna, maybe afrorevoluta.

Astounding! Potentially new symbiotic life-form discovered in Taiwan cloud forest. Sort-of 'inverted lichen': cyanobacterium creates thallus and fungus lives within it. Cyanobacterium provides nutriment via photosynthesis. Fungus (perhaps) provides structural reinforcement and dessication tolerance.

This one really lives up to the “slime mold” name. Northwest Territories, Canada. #slime #myxo #fungifriends

Some various mosses and lichens spotted on today's walk #moss

More photography fun, some lichen from a recent outing. Lichen are so neat, and I know nothing about them besides that they are symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an algae. They're also usually good air quality indicators. #lichen ##macrophotography #macro #nature #photography

Might be time to boost this again with new people arriving from fb. Thanks @paulrfoth.bsky.social for putting this together! go.bsky.app/Kt6UtG6

Always awkward stumbling upon a party that you weren’t invited to. 🌿 🍄📷

I forgot to share my lichen sketchbook page - painted from branches gifted by Storm Darragh. The storm was rough but painting the lichens created some calm afterwards. That right angled branch fit perfectly into the page corner - not what I expected from nature but then nothing ever is. #sketchbook

There were some very fine sticks around this morning.

This is a #lichen of the Pleosidium genus. Vitt, Marsh and Bovey (1988) feel "perhaps it is one of our most colorful crustose lichen".
