I would apply for this job if I didn't have the best job in the world. And if I knew anything about tax!

This is a super insightful thread. Canadians must think much more strategically about our interests in a world where the US has lost is primacy in Europe and where its power and credibility globally evaporate a bit more every day.

Relieved to hear that Francesca Albanese has been renewed for 3 more years as UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights/Palestine, despite aggressive efforts to silence her. Note to governments: truth triumphs, Palestinian lives & rights matter.

My modest contribution to the recent online discussion on whether Fukuyama is good, actually.

“As much as my dad called himself a nationalist, he was also a fierce protector of Canada’s sovereignty — he dedicated his life to its defence.”

This paragraph definitely jumped out. Translation: “Why should other countries have sovereignty?! It’s not fair, and it’s not fine!”

Team Canada usually plays hockey like it needs it, but this was different. At this hinge point of history, at this moment of uncertainty, Canada really needed this one. It felt good to win. www.thestar.com/sports/hocke...

Perhaps our greatest contemporary thinker on democracy.

Political philosopher Joseph Heath with a thought-provoking analysis of the USA crisis as fuelled by flaws inherent to the USA constitution, and why Dems are caught bw rock & hardplace

Giving online talk on “Ethics in Academic Publishing” at the SJ Center for Business Ethics on Feb. 10 at 5pm EST. I’ll be discussing the crisis of for-profit academic journal publishing, the emerging diamond open access alternative, and what we can do. You can register to attend online here:

Strong statement in support of academic freedom for speech & learning related to Gaza by Dr. Peter McInnis, President of @caut.bsky.social. Thank you, Peter! Respect for the courageous group of UBC SPPH students who provided a statement for this article.

Because this is still going on, and will, as difficult as it is to conceive, likely get worse under Trump.

I always love Jacob's ideas about the history of liberalism. A fun consequence of this thread: Marx when he was writing for the NY Tribune was perhaps one of the foremost liberal voices in America, since he opposed both the Southern planter class & the protectionism of the Northern Republicans.
