After-hours reception at the Kelvingrove this evening for the new Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway. This was probably not him.

Just blocked a troll (anti-Gàidhlig variety) whose handle celebrates Edward I of England, whose profile says he's recently retired to Skye, and whose first post says he's having trouble making friends. The reason must remain a mystery.

Pottered along the Cart for a couple of hours this morning. Didn't see much, but it was a nice morning for pottering along a river not seeing much.

West George Street.

I'd missed this piece in Research Professional (because it's in Research Professional) but there's some good practical advice in there. "Even if there are more current colleagues than future jobs, you can still find comfort in camaraderie and black humour." Ohhh yes.

This is fascinating. Also: mood.

Good morning to everyone except the driver of the First bus who went through the lights at Victoria Bridge / Clyde Street on the red and turned left across a cycle lane which had the green. (Don't often see that from bus drivers, in fairness: usually they're professionals.)

"Why The Behaviour Of About 20% Of The Electorate Of East Chesborough and Upper Dibblesford Means I Was Right About Everything All Along" — my column for every media outlet for the next two weeks.

Those of you who are dogs and needed something to bark at can thank me later.

Also for May Day, remember that time the Bishop of Meaux sent an undercover priest to investigate conditions at Euro Disney, and the priest was so angry with what he found that he joined a Communist-led union and started organising his fellow workers. www.deseret.com/1993/10/29/1...

I'll always repost this. I know there are non-trivial ironies about the venue and the song, but I'll take the hope it glimpses of a better country and a better world.

We now have an institutional statement which mentions the UKSC judgement and reiterates commitment to "our socially progressive culture", but has been worn so smooth by lawyering that it says very little in particular. Anyone who wants to harm my students will still have to come through me first.

Local history bat signal: does anyone know about Guernsey evacuees in Glasgow in summer 1940? I've had a query about St Ninian's Pollokshields acting as a reception centre: it's plausible but the only source so far is a 2010 BBC Scotland doc, now unavailable.

Copepod Swarm is totally the name of my new metal band.

On the Dangers of Stochastic Poirots.

Things that are my job that you would not guess from my job description were my job: explaining to a student that Budapest is not Prague.

Current status: wondering what fraction of the investment in research and innovation projects goes into designing logos.

Do you reckon if I try really hard I can inject "We have nailed the doubloon to the mast" into the macho strategic-planning lexicon without anyone spotting where it comes from?

Seconded, especially but not exclusively for "post-92s". You cannot understand the last 200 years of the sector we now call HE by focusing solely on institutions that were called "universities" at the time, and you'll miss out on tons of vital social history if you do.

Can we start a sweepstake on how long it takes for Calvin Robinson to join these guys?

You know what would really make me feel supported at work? Another fvcking target.

Unusual photo of a cormorant trying to operate an early model of TARDIS. 🪶

A second coot family on the big pond in Queen's Park. (There are at least three cootlets visible in that last pic.)

Please note that the Bishop is attacking correctly along the diagonal.
