Books designed to be read only by human eyes are different from books designed to be read by machines, which is why Google will tell you that the phrase “shake my booty” can be found in an 1863 English translation of Don Quixote.

Very excited to see this #earlymodern beauty out in the world, which includes a chapter on fame and religion by yours truly. 😇

In February 2024, KU Leuven and the Flemish Community purchased a special 2nd edition of Vesalius' “De Humani Corporis Fabrica” with personal notes by the humanist for a 3rd edition that never appeared. A video made upon its arrival is now available. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wk5B...

Oh yes, Homer’s famous “Tes Thdpssssps.” 👍🏻

I've just cleared a few to-do list items and been alerted that the first pre-ordered copies of Postal Intelligence have arrived (!) so now seems like as good a time as any to share some exciting and troubling tidbits from my ten years with Europe's postal technocrats 1/? #earlymodern 🗃️

'How to tell if a woman is wearing make-up. Take saffron and chew it, then get as near to the woman as you can and talk and talk to her so that your breath marks her face; if she's wearing make up, it will go yellow, if not, nothing will happen'. 🤢 Giambattista della Porta, Natural Magic, 1558.

Reposting this for the new followers 😀

Did you know the Azores were once called the Flemish Islands or the Isles of Flanders, as at some point in the late 15th/early 16th hundreds of Flemings (and the wider Habsburg Netherlands) settled there.

a beautiful rendition of the fire of 1577 affecting the Doge's Palazzo in #Venezia #EarlyModern, made in Zurich by/for the pastor Johann Jakob Wick but probably a reproduction of a printed news-sheet.

Penelope & her friends, busy with textile work to keep unwanted men at bay. With dog underfoot, too! Painted in 1561 by Jan van der Straet, aka Stradanus, whose day is today.

The gorgeous title page from Antonio Palladio's Four books of architecture, printed in Venice in 1581 #TitlePageTuesday

I was just told that I have to remove “climate” from the title of an ongoing grant if I want to keep it. And publications from that grant cannot include “climate” and other forbidden words. I can’t believe I’m writing this from the United States of America. #AcademicSky

These are difficult times so let's remember the impact humanities research has in the world. In 2022 @englishassociation.bsky.social, @univeng.bsky.social & @ies-sas.bsky.social met with colleagues to find out about their work. See 🧵Here is no. 1 on policy: englishassociation.ac.uk/speaking-for...

One of the most maddening things about this approach is that places like Cardiff have destroyed other institutions, and are now just walking away. Bangor closed its Chemistry Department in 2020, partly because our student intake was being gobbled up by the expansion at Cardiff and other places

En 1533, Érasme publie le Liber de sarcienda ecclesiae concordia, un vif plaidoyer en faveur de la réunion des chrétiens divisés. For those not opening the thread: further down the (alphabetical) list are the words 'female' and 'woman'.

I had no idea that there was an International Greek Language day ...

Personally speaking if I'd been elected with a gigantic majority and a mandate to make things better my first instinct wouldn't be to boneheadedly keep doing the same stupid things as the last guys.
