LET’S DO THIS UCSD #standupforscienceUCSD

Looking for leaders and team members for several states! If you’re interested, sign up info below :D let’s #standupforscience

My statement regarding the decision to drop the second round of the CZI Science Diversity Leadership Award funding opportunity:

I emailed NIH program officers I know to thank them for all they’ve done and continue to do. This is a great time to show appreciation—let people know you value them!

Flooding BlueSky with good news today. Neal lab received a NoA! Grateful our NIH R35 MIRA renewal is funded to support our ongoing work on membrane protein quality! 🙏🙏

Our work is finally published! We developed a robust in vitro platform to study a disease relevant membrane protease, notoriously difficult to isolate. This protease has linked to cancer & neurodegen, and our platform opens new doors for structural & drug discovery. sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

As a leader in my lab & various initiatives, I’ve made my stance clear....my commitment to DEI is unwavering. I won’t back down or shy away, even as others do. I’ll continue to uphold and advocate for these values.

If you have an undergrad that will graduate this year but who needs a little more research experience before their next step, encourage them to apply to the UConn RAMP program. genome-postbac.biology.clas.uconn.edu. The application deadline for the 2025 cohort is February 21st. 🧪 1/2

Recent years brought much talk about diversity and inclusion by many organizations. Now we’ll see how much of that was performative. For those of us that were here before DEI was a term and was fashionable, and will be here after it is considered no longer “timely”, onwards. Lots of work to get done

Nerves/fear will never stop me from speaking up when it’s important. Patients, including my mother-in-law whom is getting a drug targeted to the exact receptors I study starting today, need our uninterrupted attention. My interview with NewsNation Live. www.newsnationnow.com/video/nih-ca...

Thrilled to be amongst this cohort of exceptional scientists receiving the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE)!!!! #NSFCAREER #PECASE www.whitehouse.gov/ostp/news-up...

Exciting day as we welcome new postdoctoral fellow Gayathri Ramakrishnan to the @neal-lab.bsky.social 🎉🎉Cheers to exciting science where we take on a new direction in lab🎉🎉

First, look at these two glorious scientists. Second, I cannot stop revisiting Sonya's talk. Women, Black Women, Moms face so many barriers. I feel so buoyed by her success.

Time to celebrate for Neal lab members and @bummpucsd.bsky.social! Everyone delivered amazing talks, workshops and poster presentations at @ascbiology.bsky.social 🎉🎉Until next year!

Blessed with a community of brilliant scientists, pioneering leaders, and committed individuals paving a path for others to follow. May each of you continue to shine brightly; your light is leaving a significant mark.

The Wiley Press dinner at #CellBio2024 was impeccable! Thank you EIC Alexander Hutchinson and @phdgprotein86.bsky.social for bringing us all together for an unforgettable night!

Happening TODAY 12/17 at 10 am, Rm. 24B!!! @bummpucsd.bsky.social

To my @ascbiology.bsky.social fam… @bummp_ucsd will be leading a session tomorrow on culturally aware mentorship. Spearheaded by our amazing BUMMP board members♥️Please stop by!

Holding back tears all throughout the morning while delivering the Mentoring Keynote. It was more moving than anything to be in a room full of trailblazers in academia. Thank you @ASCBiology for this amazing recognition♥️♥️♥️

New or incoming faculty? Please come join us for a panel tomorrow at #CellBio2024 It’s in the same room as the Mentoring Keynote, which is sure to be amazing. Come to hear about best mentoring practices and stay for the panel!

So much fun at Neal lab holiday party with trainees, family, and friends♥️♥️♥️ Glimpse of some karaoke action, singing our lil hearts out to the Wicked musicals🤣Happy holidays to all!

The @neal-lab.bsky.social is heading to @ascbiology.bsky.social! Thrilled to deliver the mentoring keynote on Saturday at 8:15 AM. Plus, 6 of our amazing trainees will be presenting their work on the diverse membrane-related roles of rhomboid proteins. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Happy 17th Bday to my amazing daughter, born during my 1st year of grad school—a time when I faced the harsh realities of how tough academia can be for moms. Motherhood became my greatest gift, giving me purpose & unshakable drive to earn that PhD. To all the mamas: It’s possible. You are strong 💕

Hello, BlueSky Universe! I'm Sonya Neal, an Associate professor at UC San Diego and HHMI Freeman Hrabowski Scholar. Proudly First-Gen, Black in STEM and passionate about paying it forward. In my people-first lab, we are driven to explore the most understudied membrane proteins
