Universities that advertised their commitment to diversity in glossy brochures & fundraising campaigns now face a reckoning: was it real or just marketing? The admin bets they’ll stay silent to keep their funding. But the cost of inaction will be far greater. greencarelab.ucdavis.edu/how-universi...

“The pushback in recent days has come not only in highly competitive districts but also in deeply Republican ones, suggesting a broader problem for the party.” www.nytimes.com/2025/02/23/u...

Over the last week, in town hall events across America, angry constituents filled venues beyond capacity to speak out against Trump and Musk. Many GOP Reps were booed loudly by their crowds—even in heavily red districts.

Oh you want to know the #5thingsIDidThisWeek, sure here are the 5 accomplishments to subvert/prevent the hostile "cold war" coup that is taking over our democracy 1. Talked to a reporter at the NYT about the tragic state of US science (on my own time)

In March 2020, as exec director of a small nonprofit, I directly helped up folks make rent, set up mutual aid, got wildly creative with budget & gamed out detailed worst-case futures. And I had to fight tooth & nail with my own panicking team who didn’t want to confront our reality. Do it anyway.

An important reminder: a truly tolerant society must retain the right to deny tolerance to those who promote intolerance or it will fail.

US backward: A federal scholarship aimed at boosting students from underserved and rural areas attending historically Black colleges and universities has been put on hold. wtop.com/education/20...

At least 12 universities now have hiring freezes and nearly 30 have cut PhD admissions this year If you hear of other places you can add them to this google doc:

Spoke with someone who visited London recently. They loved the walkability, the clean air - and all the electric vehicles. Said she wouldn’t have considered even taking a black cab - the tune and walking was so nice. Didn’t even know there was a congestion tax.

How it started. How it’s going.

The scale and scope of Trump and Elon’s purge of federal workers will set our country back decades. You can't just fire everyone, gut critical agencies, halt funding to organizations across the country and think there won’t be massive consequences.

Bravo to Governor Mills of Maine! Proud that my father was a State of Mainer, and wish he were alive to hear her (he’s been gone for 39 years). Her third paragraph is the crux for me, and echoes Martin Niemöller’s famous “First they came…” maxim.

Anti-Musk sign hung outside a Tesla Dealership in Upland, California

Run for Something had to lay off a bunch of staff over the past year. Big Democratic donors don't seem to be flocking to support them.

Not being anti-fascist at this moment in history is anti-science. Probably always was. But cannot be clearer than these last few weeks.

It’s not just Texas. Measles vax rates are down in NYC as well. Most recent data: Just 81% of kids here got their first MMR dose by 24 months (down from 94% pre-pandemic) NYC Health Dept is urging all parents to make sure their kids are vax’d Learn more: on.nyc.gov/measles

runforsomething.net has a list of candidate resources that will help you run for office. One of the biggest reasons we’re in the mess we’re in right now is because not enough good people run for office and take active roles in campaigns. Be the example and @runforsomething.net

Per one source inside a federal agency when they sent me the email last night: "So fucking stupid."

W.E.B. Du Bois on the white takeover of southern public schools after Reconstruction. Not a coincidence that the chapter, "Back Towards Slavery," follows his analysis of the eventual dedegration of the public school system. Attacks on education are vital to (re)instituting authoritarian rule.

The party of “you are on your own”

Proud to stand with the LGBTQ+ community as an ally in the fight.

NO KINGS is extremely effective because it’s simple, an extremely widely held belief, and gets right to the core of Trump’s assault without having to use words lots of people don’t understand

Outreach funding opportunity, sponsored by the Fly Board: Non-profit programs anywhere in the world that introduce middle school, high school, or college students to Drosophila research are eligible to apply! The number of students that this funding would impact and financial need will be considered

And these 2 PhD students are ready to go, the 3 other scientists are cranking and we love them 🥺♥️, but we NEED more support! From volunteers, to org support, we’re calling on the scientific community! JOIN US! SEE YOU IN DC Y’ALL 🫡 @standupforscience.bsky.social

I've spent the day working with Reporter data... differences in number of funded applications from 1/20/24-2/21/24 and 1/20/25-2/21/25 by state. This is the picture (happy to share code):

Thought I wouldn’t need to post this because it would make the rounds but I’m not seeing it in the TL so here’s a #GiftLink from the only coverage I’ve seen that Joy Ann Reid has been fired by MSNBC www.nytimes.com/2025/02/23/b...

"'We’re bringing attention to what’s happening to the parks, which are every American’s properties,' said Gavin Carpenter, a maintenance mechanic with Yosemite and military veteran who supplied the flag and helped hang it." www.sfchronicle.com/outdoors/art...

I keep coming back to this photo I took yesterday of the Stonewall Inn, and the vow written in neon in the window, which I think we would all do well to live by right now: “In the name of those who came before me, I pledge to be brave, to be true to myself, and to fight like hell for equality.”

Happy Birthday to WEB Du Bois, who wrote about the wildly important concept of psychological wages of whiteness in the first history of Reconstruction, *Black Reconstruction in America*, which he messily dedicated to his mistress, Dr. Virginia Alexander, and not his wife, Nina Gomer #BookSky

Good news about the fight against illegal DEI bans from the AAUP! The “US District Court for the District of Maryland granted a preliminary nationwide injunction on key parts of a pair of executive orders issued by President Trump..” www.aaup.org/news/win-aau...

I’ve long believed that the American media would be more clear-eyed about the return and actions of wanna-be dictator Donald Trump and the coup by Musk if it was happening overseas in a foreign country. Here's the story the US should be writing this weekend: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/king-donal...

Love national parks? I'm lucky enough to live in one of the best parks in the world, and on Saturday we held a demonstration to protest the mass & indiscriminate firing of our friends and coworkers. #nationalparks #rangers #publicland #Yosemite #Firefall #fedworkers #massfiring #NPS #ProtectourParks

In DEB, the division for environmental biology, SEVEN program directors were fired. That's more than 25% of their program directors. These unjust firings are cruel and are devastating science in the US.

There's something that @adriennemareebrown.bsky.social regularly says which is that you don't need to live in someone else's imagination. I think that it's so important to hold on to this. Work to create the world YOU want to live in rather than to succumb to the one designed by your enemy.

"Higher education is the first line of defense. Universities must understand that this isn’t just about their funding—it’s about whether access to opportunity remains a national value or becomes a privilege reserved for the few."

I think people both within science and outside science don’t fully appreciate the miracle that were the Covid-19 vaccines. How much courage it took to get the sequence out, how much work had already gone into figuring out the best viral antigen and how best to present it. 1/

Spending isn't a “conspiracy” just because Musk doesn’t know how to read usaspending.gov. A program isn't waste just because it doesn’t help the richest man in the world. It isn't fraud just because he doesn’t like it. A law is not illegal just because he disagrees with it.

That's an awful lot of programs cutting graduate admissions in the biomedical sciences.

Sonoma State University management has betrayed students, faculty, and staff, and is intent on tearing down the People's University. CSU administrators need to meet and confer with CFA members before implementing decisions that impact faculty. We will keep you updated on what happens next.

BREAKING: As Elon Musk said on X would be happening, I can now report that all federal employees are receiving an email directing them to provide “approx. 5 bullets of what you accomplished last week.” It directs them not to send any classified information and is due by 11:59p Monday.
