Here in the UK January was colder than average, it was dry in Scotland and Northern Ireland but wetter in England, it was generally sunnier than average. Here is a #dataviz summarising the weather/climate for the last year.

Where I live we now have got through the 10 weeks of the year with less than 9 hours of daylight and are approaching what I like to call the "rapidly lengthening daylight" period of the year. This #dataviz shows the weekly loss and gain of daylight at 51 degrees north.

This time tomorrow 108mph gusts in Western Scotland!

2024 was another warmest year globally and for the first time exceeded 1.5°C above the pre-industrial global temperature. Here is a #dataviz of an exploding spear/syringe of global temperatures.

Here in the UK, 2024 was the 4th warmest year on record, meaning the last 3 years have had 3 of the 4 warmest years. It was quite wet and a pretty dull year overall. December has been pretty mild overall, dull and with average rainfall. This #dataviz shows the weather/climate summary for 2024.

Gifts my true love gave me over Christmas, I'll take the gold but maybe next year take it easy on the birds. #dataviz

A niche stat for the aficionado, Dec 1st 2024 was the first time the UK mean minimum temperature has exceeded 10°C #globalwarming #climatechange

November has been a mixed month in the UK. It started off very dull and mild. Then there was a very cold snap that brought temperatures back to average. Overall it was dry but storm Bert brought quite a bit of rain to England. There was more sunshine in the second half of the month. #dataviz

Because day length according to the sun is only 24 hours on 4 days of the year, the time of solar noon (highest point in the sky) changes each day. Meaning the earliest sunset and latest sunrise do not occur on the same day. This #dataviz shows sunrise and sunset times for London over next 6 weeks.

Can't remember the last time we had November snow in Devon!

It's late my love, and life for mice, though short and rife with sorrows, traps, and awful things like cats, has space for quiet moments too. Tonight my sweet, let's me and you go tango like we used to do, under the bench on platform two. bbc.co.uk/news/science...

This #dataviz compares the of area of land vs the area of sea across the globe. On this equal area map each box is about the area of Australia or the contiguous USA - we are a water world! For #map geeks, this may be the only sensible use of the Gall–Peters projection!

As the nights draw in in the northern hemisphere here is a #dataviz to show night vs day at different latitudes as the year progresses. Note how at the solstices the speed of day length change slows right down meaning it takes a long time to change from those long nights and short days!

A variation on my recent post, this #dataviz shows the path of the sun throughout the day for each day of the year. Showing poles, Arctic/Antarctic circle, 45N/45S, tropics and the equator. During the equinox the left and right are the same, the solstices show the greatest contrast.

What is the difference between weather and climate. This #dataviz shows the "Central England" average temperature for periods ranging from 1 day (weather) to 30 years (climate). This shows the climate signal emerging. Note the varying y axis that covers the range of the data.

Thanks for following me, I seem to have gained a 1000 or so new followers in the last week! I work for the UK Met Office and am an expert in generating bespoke #dataviz and making interactive websites which focus on pests. I will keep posting what is hopefully engaging and unusual #dataviz.
