Spring arrives in the northern hemisphere early tomorrow morning! Do you know why our ancestors created the word “equinox” to mark this day (& the first day of fall)? Curious to see what one year of sunlight falling on our planet looks like from space?! @ourislanduniverse.bsky.social has got you! 🔭

Here are some photons I rescued from crashing into my driveway a while back. Inside the core of the Heart Nebula 🧪🔭 #astrophotography

See that dark spot? That’s not a sunspot. It's a planet!! In 2012, Venus perfectly aligned with the Sun, creating a rare "Venusian annular eclipse" with an enormous ring of fire. This won't happen again until 2117. More info here: apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap25031... 🔭🧪🐡

The very special night of May 10, 2024 rewarded attentive observers of the sky with the strongest display of #northernlights I've ever seen in lower latitudes by far (here: 49° 42′ N, Wasserliesch, near #Trier). #aurora #polarlights #astrophotography #astroscapes #astronomy #photography #nightsky

This #Hubble telescope image shows the Trumpler 14 star cluster some 8000 lightyears away. The stars are extremely young, only half a million years old. Many will end their lives in a few million years in great explosions. #astronomy #astroedu #space #spacephotography #astronomyimages #sciencephotos

If I can't find good news on Earth, I'll find it in Space. 🔭

NGC 2264 – the Christmas Tree Cluster & Cone Nebula! I did the composition in SHO. This deep-space view reveals incredible detail and contrast. A rewarding target to image and process—hope you like it! 🔭 #astrophotography (78×300s Ha / 64×300s SII exposures over 2 nights) @kat-astro-bot.bsky.social

NASA has published this year’s edition of Spinoff, their annual magazine showcasing all the ways NASA technology has been reused for new things. Refer to this next time someone questions if it’s worth spending money on space research 🔭🧪 www.nasa.gov/newsletters/...

The Milky Way in the direction of the constellation of Scutum. The Eagle and the Omega Nebula appear as small reddish smudges close to the trees. The Omega nebula is one of the largest star-forming regions in our galaxy. 🧪 🔭

Life Hack: Exploring #Astronomy might inspire you or your kids to pursue careers in STEM fields. Or even a hobby. Or just a passing interest. Which helps prevent mental decay and makes you live longer!

Happy Elizabeth Peratrovich Day! Ḵaax̱gal.aat (1911–1958), who was Raven of the Tlingit Lukaax.ádi clan, gave a moving speech that is believed to be a large reason the first civil rights bill for Alaska Natives was passed in 1945. Read more about her here: archives.alaska.gov/education/pe...

It's been almost exactly 5 years since I last NSO-ed a roller derby game. It felt like I returned to where I belong and I am so glad to be back 💙

We want to take a moment to express how proud we are of you, America. You have stood up and spoken out every step of the way—especially when Congress and the media remained silent. When we called for help, you answered.

My son got a pic of a snowy rainbow this morning.

There’s going to be a lot of activists telling you that you aren’t doing enough over the next four years, so please remember to follow your boundaries and limits — not theirs. Do more when you can, but don’t feel bad when you can’t. Your activism will ebb and flow over time, and that’s normal.

Earnest post, but: a thing I like here is it’s okay to have moments of happiness in public without being broadly scolded, and I believe that sustaining this kind of humanity will be very important as we resist fascism. We have to sustain each other. Making joy isn’t denial, it’s how we will survive

new rule: if there’s crying in therapy, we get ice cream that night

The remote work debate was funny because it forced the question "Is a job something valuable you do or is it a place you go to be watched like daycare" and the answer for a lot of them was yeah it's the daycare thing now come on inside recess is over

I am just looking around today, feeling overwhelmed by the number of extraordinary people I know who have been working very hard for a very long time towards making this flying rock safer and more free for more people. I know these times are scary. They are. But we're not alone. You are not alone.

Anyone else having a tough time making the call to cut out all things Meta (namely Instagram) because that's kind of the Millennial Facebook and how I have kept in touch with family and friends? 👀 But at the same time 🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕 I don't want to give them another ounce of my attention

Just a quick reminder, regardless of what you’re told: Science is real. Climate change is real. Reading is good. Your bosses/ceos don’t care about you. Black Lives Matter. LGBTQ+ lives matter. Your loved ones matter. Finding joy in the midst of all this shit is an act of resistance.
